How to Save Money at Metropolitan Veterinary Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So grateful to have found this practice. I looked on-line and saw that Dr Yates is an exotic vet. I have a house rabbit and was going to an inconvenient and overpriced practice that was 45 minutes away by ride share. I couldn’t believe my luck to find a kind, caring, reasonably priced vet practice that was less than two miles away! Even more amazing is a practice off Michigan Ave with great prices. This visit was a fraction of what I spent in the past. At the previous place I went to, it would cost $400 plus each visit. Here they don’t try to upsell you and people are nice. Dr Yates is super caring and considerate. She’s allergic to rabbits but takes precautions to care for them. I’ve dealt with rabbit vets all around the country for 30+ years and this place stands out as one of the best. I love her approach and how careful she was with my bun. I walked home and my bunny enjoyed the beautiful day with a light breeze. I found my new vet! Thanks Metro Vet Center.

Our experience at Metropolitan Veterinary Center was nothing short of amazing. We’re new to Chicago and hadn’t yet found a regular vet for our dogs. When one of them got sick overnight, we needed to find someone who could see him right away. They answered immediately and were able to schedule a same-day appointment. From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff was welcoming and efficient — we were greeted and brought to a room right away. Dr. Mitchell was lovely and thorough in her exam, answering all of our questions and reassuring us that our pup would be well cared for. Kayla, who worked alongside Dr. Mitchell, was an absolute joy to interact with — kind, attentive, and clearly caring toward our dog. They walked us through their plan of care and were completely upfront and transparent about costs. There was no pressure for unnecessary tests, and they created a treatment plan that was both effective and cost-conscious. If you’re looking for a vet in the area, I can’t recommend Metropolitan Veterinary Center enough. It was a 10/10 experience, and we’re so happy to have found such a wonderful place to bring our dogs.

It's with a heavy heart that I write this review. My cat has been with Metropolitan for over a decade. However prospective clients need to know what they are signing up for. The vets and vet techs are wonderful. This is not a review of their service or competence. This is a review of their business relationship with VetCove. VetCove operates Metropolitan's online pharmacy. Metropolitan will not prescribe to any other pharmacy. You may pick up a written prescription, but you will soon find there are no brick and mortar pet pharmacies in this area and it can take weeks for an online pharmacy to process a written prescription and get you the meds your pet needs. Metropolitan will not send a prescription to another pharmacy even if their own pharmacy is out of stock of something your pet needs, even if it is in stock and available at another pharmacy. You will graciously be offered the option of picking up the meds at the clinic at a 100% to 1000% markup. If they do not have it in the clinic or their online shop then you can discuss alternative medications with the vet. This is an abuse and exploitation of a sick and vulnerable animal. To force a change in medication not out of medical necessity but because of a coercive business practice is deeply unethical and cruel. If your pet has chronic conditions and you need to purchase meds regularly you will encounter this problem with some frequency. I will not bring my pet to a vet that is willing to harm them in honor of a contract with VetCove. Furthermore, this contract is disrespectful and contemptuous of my rights as a consumer. Please understand that in this scenario you - the poor schmuck who pays the bill, you are no longer the customer. Metropolitan is the customer. You are merely an asset in a portfolio of assets that has been handed over to VetCove and you are forced to give them your money to get your pet the meds they need. Furthermore, VetCove has no incentive to provide good service to you because, again, you are no longer the customer, even though you are the one who pays the bill. I hope this review will be useful to pet parents who are shopping for a new vet. I will be lodging a compliant with the IL attorney general to see if contracts such as these violate any consumer protection laws. Edit to add : Their response below contains numerous lies or what I would call "dissembling euphemisms". What they wrote - "Most — though not all — online pharmacies now require what’s called a wet signature prescription, meaning an original paper prescription with a doctor’s handwritten signature must be mailed to them." is an outright lie. Every online pharmacy I consulted accepts electronic prescriptions from a vet's office. They "recommend" their own pharmacy because " it is the fastest". It is only the fastest because they refuse to submit any electronic prescriptions anywhere else, so you will be stuck with mailing paper prescriptions and wait weeks for the meds. I am thoroughly disgusted by their dishonesty. I have taken my pet and my business somewhere where we can get a modicum of respect.

Dr. Mitchell really helped with a great game plan for my dog Stormy’s arthritis. 100% recommend!
