How to Save Money at MedVet Chicago

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Me and my family deeply appreciate MedVet for the expression of sympathy and kindness that they showed my family during our time of bereavement. They were a huge comfort in guiding us through the cremation period. Nothing can replace our sweet dog Angel, but we are very satisfied!

I feel like the company could really do a much better job at providing an area for dogs to use the bathroom while you are waiting for extended periods of time. If I go to a bank they have miles of grass...this is more abandoned lot vibes :( Med Vet is one of the most expensive care facilities in Chicago. They gave great care from knowledgeable staff!

I would not recommend bringing your pet here. My cat wasn't eating or drinking, and her very closes early on Wednesdays, so I brought her to Medvet around noon. After about 4 hours, I said I was concerned that she still wouldn't drink water, so they sent a tech to take her vitals. The tech said it was fine, and dismissed my concerns about dehydration. They left us sitting in a freezing waiting room until 6:30 with no check ins or any indication of how long we would be waiting. Once they finally saw my cat, it felt like they were more interested in upselling us than treating her. At around 9pm, they said the dehydration was so severe that they wanted to charge us $3-4k for an IV drip, even though they dismissed my concern about dehydration earlier in the day. I'm writing this review while sitting outside trying to warm up (seriously, the waiting room is frigid!) and waiting for them to let me take her home. We'll see her regular vet tomorrow where I know I can trust the diagnosis and treatment. All told, this is going to cost over $1,000, and my main takeaway was not that they want my cat to feel better, but that they want to find ways to charge me more. Everyone I spoke at Medvet to was kind, but the experience at this clinic was not good overall.

Wally seemed to be having trouble breathing so out of an abundance of caution, I brought him to medvet around midnight. Check in/registration was quick and easy. Staff was highly courteous and professional. I did have to wait a little bit in-between doctors, which was to be expected given this is an emergency hospital. I appreciated the fact that they have a "quiet" area sectioned off in the waiting room to give anxious pets (and people) some space. I could tell a quiet and calm atmosphere is a top priority for Medvet, especially for families who have to say goodbye. Dr. Nguyen was 100% transparent about the costs and did not try to pressure me to go one way or another. He helped me feel 100% comfortable with my decisions. When it was all said and done (emergency exam, chest xray, medication, and optional prescription for kitty inhaler) it was just under $700 and 3 hours of my time. It wasn't how I wanted to start the weekend, but it was worth it for the peace of mind in the middle of the night. I'm grateful Wally is ok. Thank you Dr Nygeun, the technicians, and front desk staff for all you do. My only first world complaints was that 1) while there were plenty of wall outlets, there were no USB ports to charge my phone so I could update my family or pass the time. And 2) I wish there was decaf tea/coffee options in the waiting area. But that's literally it and those are stupid problems.

For a Saturday the wait was fine and triage and communication from staff was easy and friendly. Dr Knox was great and my dog got comprehensive care like always. He left happy but in a cone ha
