How to Save Money at Duke Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

⭐ Very Disappointed and Deeply Unsatisfied with Our Experience ⭐ I feel compelled to share our experience so other pet owners in Chicago can make an informed choice — because there are many clinics in the city, and this one would absolutely be the last choice. My fiancé and I had an extremely unprofessional experience at this clinic. Our 8-year-old dog, who we treat like a child, was not given the care or attention she deserved. She had been refusing food for 2–3 days but was still drinking water, and shaking badly, which for us was a clear sign something was wrong. Despite our concern and the fact that she had been hospitalized just two months prior, the doctor insisted everything looked normal after a basic exam and pushed for an unnecessary X-ray — which felt more like a way to increase the bill than to help our dog. Unfortunately, the visit only made things worse. Our dog’s condition declined, and we had to rush to VEG Emergency Hospital — which we highly recommend despite being expensive, because they truly care and act fast when your pet needs help. What made things even more disappointing was the lack of compassion afterward. My fiancé sent a detailed email describing everything that happened — and we never received a response or a follow-up call. Only after she posted a negative review did someone finally reach out, not to ask how our dog was doing, but simply to discuss the review itself. If you’re looking for a clinic that truly cares about your pet’s health and well-being, please look elsewhere. We would never want anyone to go through what we experienced here.

This place is amazing! They’ve always done great work with my pets. From oral surgery to shots, the staff are extremely sweet and caring about your pets! They got my dog in last minute over Labor Day weekend, because he got a wound on his face from who knows and they were able to treat him and get him in and out. With it being a busy weekend I was very happy they could get him in. And they don’t charge a huge bill. Great staff. Great place to take your pets!

The Staff at Duke Animal Hospital are superior to most. The team members go above and beyond to care for your fur baby. My heart was so full after having my dog cared for, especially knowing that they would stay commited to her needs, in a moment of deep despair. If your fur baby is not doing well, go directly to Duke Animal Hospital to get the right treatment with the ethical choice.

I've been taking both of my cats (one senior and one geriatric) to Duke Animal Hospital for the past few years, and I highly recommend their hospital, their vets, and their technicians to anyone looking for care for their pets. My older cat is sweet and snuggly around myself and my wife, but is fearful and distrustful of most strangers. Despite this, they've always handled him with consistent patience and care. One tech also called his fluffy black mane "majestic," which I appreciated. His fluff isn't easy to groom. My younger cat is much more friendly and appears to be very popular with the technicians. I've found their comments about how sweet he is and how much they're looking forward to seeing him to be very touching. Regardless of whether it's an emergency visit or a scheduled appointment, rest assured that your beloved pet is in good hands. My experiences with their staff have been nothing but positive, and their advice has always been helpful. If one of the staff see this, thanks for taking such good care of Poe and Louis! They're very happy, healthy boys because you!

Truly the best. Started going to Duke a few years ago after trying out several other vets in the area and it has always been a great experience. They kept my older dog healthy and comfortable through aging and felt like friends. Incredibly responsive to emails and calls anytime there was an emergency, knowledgeable staff, accommodating with scheduling, and empathetic caretakers. My dog had a few dental procedures performed and they were always awesome with check-ins and with post-care.
