How to Save Money at Companion Animal Hospital River North

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

DO NOT RECOMMEND I had taken my dog here but stopped as service and care quality had plummeted. there seems to be little communication between the staff and I frequently receive different directives from different people. I have been charged for random medications that a doctor did not tell me he was prescribing and did not include any instructions. The more experienced doctors and staff have left and frankly the newer staff seems inexperienced and unorganized. It’s been very difficult to get a timely response to any requests, I’ve been told my dog needs tests he doesn’t and my appointments have been cancelled with less than twelve hours notice. It used to be decent but it costs a fortune to get care here and I’ve been deeply disappointed with the care offered. The next vet I went to cured an issue that companion was never able to figure out. I would highly recommend looking for a different veterinarian if you are looking there are plenty of other options in the neighborhood.

I couldn't initially put my finger on it, but after multiple visits and reading the comments, I agree that we needed to leave this place. First visit, I come to realize that the staff was somewhat unprofessional. Baby and cute talk to pets makes sense, but it was over the top. They talked about their pets A LOT, sometimes telling me the same things about them multiple times. They were quite jumpy, and many had to rely on another employees to handle my cat who in the room isn't awful (which is funny because it would be those telling me they had tons of cats who couldn't handle my cat as well). He does not like shots or blood drawn, but doesn't attack or hurt anyone otherwise. I could just tell my cat wasn't comfortable around any of them, maybe because I wasn't. Another reviewer said the vibes off, and I would agree. It is a bit pricey. They cost almost as much as the vet ER we went to. For two visits plus some fluids we spent $631.87. It is downtown, but it felt a bit more than I expected. This is the first vet that struggled to get my cat's blood. They recommended anti anxiety meds. The new vet took 5 minutes and no meds. They may say it affects the results, but no other vet has mentioned this. After fasting him all day, I think this was the straw that broke the camels back for me. The new vet made me realize that Companion is full of brand new vets and untrained staff. They do not have the expertise, and it seems like several doctors have left the facility recently. I would recommend going elsewhere until they get more experienced vets and trained staff. My new vet told me he hasn't prescribed something they prescribed my cat with kidney disease for 10 years, since he graduated vet school, and he said the amount of subq fluids Companion said to administer was too often/high.

I really enjoy taking my cat to the folks at Companion Animal Hospital. I feel good about how my cat will be treated and trust them with her care. I get the sense they geniully enjoy taking care of pets. The location is quite convenient for me as well.

This place was nothing but pure headache-inducing misery for me. The prices are absurd, especially in comparison to a vet I used to see, and the communication is also pretty awful. It took forever for me to get an estimate for a dental cleaning for my cat, which was far more expensive than it would have been at my old vet's office (when an older cat of mine had to get dental work done), plus several hundred dollars for blood work on top of that. Apparently pet owners in River North don't mind being fleeced all that much, which is whatever, you do you, but all this experience taught me was to stick with the vets I already know. I won't be coming back here again. Edit: 1/18/23 I took my cat to Angela Duke of Duke Animal Hospital, and she was phenomenal. She was able to get my cat in for a dental cleaning not even a month after our visit, and it went very well. Even with 2 extracted teeth, I wound up paying less than $1000, which is far, far less than the service Companion River North was trying to push. The vet who did the procedure was incredibly sweet and took the time to inform me of what they did and why. It's worth the trip to Duke for the stellar staff and equally stellar pet care. Look them up if you're nervous about Companion/were disappointed in their service or prices.

WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! This applies to BOTH DOCTORS - a previous AND COURVILLE! THIS HAS become less of a caring vet clinic and has turned into BAD UPSELLING and horrible, HORRIBLE care. BOTH vets have been pushing so many services that cats and dogs don't need. We have 3 pets going to this clinic and IT HAS BEEN HORRIBLE LATELY! We have spent more than a couple thousand of dollars on SO MANY UNNECESSARY things! I am finally putting an END to this! PLEASE FIND ANY OTHER VET! THIS PLACE IS NOT GOOD AT ALL! I am not sure if management has changed or what is going on but this place is AWFUL!
