How to Save Money at BLVD Vet River North

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The entire staff at BLVD River North might love my pup more than I do!! They’re the best at helping to manage every step of his wellness journey, including hanging out with all of us on the floor if that’s what makes him feel more comfortable, and providing extra treat givers for nail trims. I feel so lucky to be a part of the BLVD family!

Had such an amazing and helpful experience at Boulevard Vet River North! Our rescue dog was having emergency health issues and we brought him in as a first time client. Boulevard was able to see us within the same day and get him fully treated and back to health. The entire team was so helpful, kind, and understanding from start to finish. Very transparent about pricing, what care was being provided, and the cost options. Highly recommended! Thank you so much to the Boulevard team for being so accommodating and supportive!

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Courville & her team. From our very first visit with Dr. Courville she has always shown an incredible depth of knowledge and genuine compassion. She always takes the time to thoroughly explain everything, making sure I feel informed and supported every step of the way. But what truly sets her apart is the way she always makes my pets feel truly important and valued—just as much as my pets are to me. Bonus that the clinic itself is adorable, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere too. Highly recommend.

A lovely place to take your pet for all their medical needs. BLVD Vet cares about your little critter as much as you do. Fantastic care and very attentive staff. Glad I found them.

I wish I could give zero stars. I booked an appointment for my senior dog to get vaccines up to date and to discuss his arthritis, which worsened since his last vet visit. At our visit, the vet took my dog to another room for his vaccines then tried to muzzle him. The vet brought my dog back into the room and explained that he growled at them. I apologized and asked if we could do vaccines in the room together as that is what we're all used to at his old vet. The vet refused and told me to bring him back on trazodone. Even though this has never been requested of me in the 11 years I've had my dog, I agreed and rescheduled an appointment, prepaying $199 for bloodwork and other testing including a urine test. On the day of my dog's next appointment, I gave him the trazodone, collected his urine, and stored it in my fridge. The vet then called me and cancelled his appointment just two hours prior because a vet had to do the exam, not just a vet tech (although I was under the impression he would see a vet as the exam was comprehensive and quoted to me at $700+ when I had already paid $275 for the initial visit). When I asked if I could just bring his urine sample, the vet refused and told me to throw out the one I collected even though I prepaid. My partner called the vet and asked what we should do about the upcoming urine test as we used our sample collection kit. The vet offered to get the sample through a needle poke and offered $25 off the service. However, since the service was double that price, my partner asked for it to be comped. The woman on the phone consulted with her supervisor and approved the discount. The next day, the vet called my partner back revoking the discount entirely. There wasn't much of a reason given other than the fee has to go to ultrasound equipment, even though the woman on the phone agreed that the vet owns their ultrasound equipment and that my dog was not scheduled for an ultrasound. Will be finding another vet because this has been an awful experience.
