How to Save Money at Algonquin Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Just took my cockatiel here and it was one of the best vet experiences I’ve ever had. Great staff and priced very reasonably, especially for exotics. Very pleased with everything and will be using them going forward

I have been very happy with the care and support my hedgehog and our family has received. Dr Durante, Leslie, and Sarah have been so helpful and knowledgeable. Millie has been struggling with urinating blood and has been treated with 2 rounds of antibiotic. They took great care Millie during her xray today and examination of a bump that was determined to be a cyst. So grateful for this private practice that seems to have a specialty in exotics. Thank you for all this office does!!!!!

A great experience....the staff at Algonquin Animal Clinic made a bad experience for my dog, a not-so-bad experience overall! Everyone was caring, compassionate and very knowledgeable. This vet clinic appears to be one of the only clinics these days, with a vet who talks to the pet parent, answers any questions, and treats the animal in the exam / treatment room. Most clinics have the pet parent go into the exam room, a vet tech comes in to get the dog to take in the back for care, then comes back to summarize the care for the pet parent. Not here at Algonquin.....they really wanted to be sure I knew what was going on and how to care for my dog....who was a dog bite victim. After our visit to Algonquin Animal Clinic, she's doing great!

I recently found Dr. Durante to care for my 13+ year old rabbit. He identified several big problems and found some great ways to address them. She had a UTI which he prescribed for and also arthritis and gingivitis for which he prescribed metacam. Her UTI is gone and she is moving better now...a sign of a reduction in her arthritis pain. He pointed out that her teeth are very short...which is an unusual problem, but it helped to explain why she has been having trouble chewing her hay. I still give her unlimited fresh hay but she also gets pellets and this has helped put some weight back on her, which she really needed. Her age is up there...so I expect her to have some issues, but she is doing better with her daily dose of metacam (it's banana flavored and she LOVES it! It's like a morning treat for her). I had always read that rabbits were not supposed to be bathed, and the initial problem with movement before she began the metacam had resulted in her having a scaling on her leg that was red and painful. He told me how to bathe her and what to use and that I can do that several times per week. Now her leg is fluffy and healed and she is clean and happy. She doesn't mind her butt baths at all, and likes being cleaned up and gently dried. Dr. Durante made a big difference in my old bunny's health and happiness. He is a very good rabbit vet. So glad we found him!

Great vet and very sweet staff! They were very kind to both my dogs and one can be aggressive at times. Highly recommend this place!
