How to Save Money at Ewing Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my dad's cat in for an eye issue and a vaccine booster. The vet and vet techs were very nice and friendly, as was the front desk staff. This would have been a nice visit if not for the lack of professionalism, however. We had to wait 40 minutes for an open room in an extremely loud waiting room that was very stressful for the cat. Employees were very loud in what sounded like casual conversation, a dog was barking pretty much the entire time we were there, and there were tools from the previous patient left dirty in the sink of our exam room. There was also a cat wandering around with a diaper on, and the diaper was clearly used and very stinky. $53 also seemed very high for the method to check my cats eye, and was not included in the cost of the examination. Staff was nice and the exam was quick but I question the organization and competency of the clinic overall due to my (one-time) experience.

Staff was very sweet, they were able to get me an appointment quickly which was greatly appreciated. I wish there was more sound proofing, the facility was loud and echoing which made me more anxious so I can only imagine how stressful it is on the pets. I also wish communication had been better so that I could have come better prepared with the right documents and samples, and if I hadn't asked certain questions it didn't seem like I would have been told what was needed or going on. Overall it was a good experience, just some constructive feedback.

Brought my 7 month old Weim in the a large laceration on his back outside leg. They took us in as an emergency visit when others wouldn’t even consider seeing him. Kept him overnight and stitched him up. I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Lieske and all the staff. We have been back every other day for laser treatments and to fix up his dying skin. My Weim is super excited to greet all the staff and that just shows me they care. Dogs are way better judges of character than us humans are. I won’t take any of my pets to any other vet ever again. He has had two overnight stays so far and still loves to go see everyone for his laser treatments. Thank you for all you do. Dr. Lieske has been amazing at taking the time too address each and every one of this worried moms questions!

I cannot say enough good things about Ewing Animal Hospital. We have utilized services by both Dr. Wethered & Dr. Lieske for various reasons across the years (annual check-ups, spays, tumor removal, blood panels, kidney failure, multiple day hospitalizations, etc.). There is no such thing as a dumb question and I have never felt like I was rushed through an appointment or like communication was lacking like some other reviews state. They do a really great job at trying to accommodate any of your scheduling needs. Both vets also work out of another location so if their schedule at Ewing does not fit your availability or needs, they do a great job at coordinating with the other location to ensure your pet is able to be seen. The staff ranging from their awesome veterinarians, vet techs to their front reception team show that they actually care which really helps during those spooky hospital stays because you can trust that your pet is in good hands (and receives love and attention during their stay). That portion was HUGE for me. I knew my pets were not just hanging out alone in their kennel. Visits were allowed and each staff member we came in contact with had a million things to say and chatted about the time they were spending with them. I could not recommend them enough.

The staff has always gone above and beyond when it comes to caring for our cats. They are friendly and treat us(humans and felines) with respect and compassion. Dr Wethered is amazing at what he does and how qualified he is with animals. My cat Roxi was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in May. It came on very fast and I was concerned about her quality of life. Dr Wethered talked options and checked on us frequently to see if the option of medicine we chose was working. In June, Roxi took a turn for the worse after weeks of doing better. I was a nervous wreck and called the hospital in tears. They got me in immediately. The staff and Doctor knew that I was concerned with the financial aspect of ultrasounds, x-rays, labs, and a hospital stay. They worked with me to alleviate those stressors and to focus on Roxi. Especially, as Roxi had never spent a night away from home. I was encouraged to come down and spend time with her after work, which I took full advantage of especially, as it was almost her 15th birthday. I am forever thankful for that because she ended up passing there hours after my last visit.I hold that last hour holding her while we rocked and watched the fish in the lobby aquarium. It helps ease the pain of losing her knowing that I had those precious moments and that she was in good hands with people that truly care and love animals. I can never thank the entire staff enough that my furbaby was so loved and cared for. It has taken me a little bit of time before I could write this review because my heart was broken. I could not have asked for a better experience, under the circumstances, for my Roxi girl. The day after she passed, I received a sympathy flower delivery from the hospital for my loss. When I had her remains cremated, I was only expecting a small box. What I received was beyond my expectations. The memorial box is extremely nice quality and very solid. Her paw print was a bonus that I wasn't expecting. Needless to say, many tears were shed when I saw both of them. Thank you, Ewing Animal Hospital. I will never forget your kindness.
