How to Save Money at Petersen Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When our sweet pup of 12 1/2 years was not getting the help she needed from another vet we came here. Dr green listened to me and although it was to late by this time she did all she could and also was so caring to me andy family. Whe could tell our fur baby meant something to her In just the short time she knew our baby. When we got another puppy Dr green was there for all the checkups. And loves on our now almost 11 month old as if it was her own. Thank you Dr green for having a loving heart and the love you have for animals. It shows

It took me awhile to post a review because this pet clinic shook me to the core on how awful they are. Two years ago I brought my cats in for an annual check up. We got a thumbs up and we were on our way. My cat the next day woke up and couldn’t breathe so I called Peterson Pet Clinic and brought him in right away. They couldn’t tell me what was wrong with my cat but they ran test after test and told me if I didn’t pay a 3000 dollar bill I couldn’t have my cat back or see him. My original vet that had seen my cat for the last few years never came in to check on us. The owner of the clinic only cares about money and not your pets. Another lady at this clinic told us our cat wasn’t going to make it to a different clinic and that we should leave him there to die. Well guess what.. two years later my beautiful cat is still alive and that is no thanks to you and this awful pet clinic. I know this clinic has great reviews (hence why I originally went here) but if you read my review know that because of this clinic I almost lost my sweet fur baby. If I could give this place a zero star review I would.

We had our first visit today at Petersen and I was impressed. It's clean, the people are friendly, it does not smell like animals, and they care about your pets. Dr. Knudson? (Sorry if I spelled it wrong) was awesome with our German Shepard and was patient with him while he was anxious and fussy with his ears. They were up front and transparent about the cost of the visit and that was SUPER helpful. it allowed us to decide what we wanted to do within our budget. They also provided an estimate for his next follow up visit. so there were no surprises. I would absolutely recommend this place. A bit pricier than others but, I feel that it's worth it.

Dr. McGinty at Petersen Pet Hospital will forever be our family vet. He was our dog Stanley's vet for over 10 years and we appreciate all the help he gave us. He is kind, caring, attentive, very thorough, and full of the best knowledge. He encourages questions and is so supportive. The techs and staff are very sweet and always have smiles and you can tell they enjoy the pets and give their all. We are very happy and proud our new puppy will be in his and their care! 💜

Dr. Greene is wonderful to work with. I genuinely feel like she cares about my pups and wants the best for them. Their products are a little pricey that they sell there. Their services are a tiny bit more expensive which I'm ok with since they offer great customer service and care.
