How to Save Money at Vidalia Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great assistants! Loved everyone there. They even stayed way after hours just for our Buddy. He was knocking on deaths door and we were out of town . Thank you all the ladies who went above and beyond for us .

Our dog Moose needed some dental work for a fractured tooth done that our local vet could not do and we were recommended to Dr. May at the Vidalia Veterinary Clinic. They were able to get an appointment scheduled for him very quickly and were so patient and kind to answer all my questions leading up to the procedure. We drove over 2 hours to get to this clinic and it was well worth it! Every single staff member we interacted with were friendly, kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. They all made me feel so good about leaving my pup in their care. Dr. May was so nice and explained everything to us so thoroughly with photos, charts, etc so that we could make the best decision for our dog. The procedure went extremely well and it was clear there was a lot of care and attention given to the issue. We really appreciate all the hard work the staff and Dr. May did for our dog, we are very grateful and would recommend this to anyone in the surrounding areas needing dental care (or any kind of care) for their pets!

We took our pets here last December for their yearly checkups. We are new to the area, so we were trying to find a good vet. This one is not it... The vets at the clinic don't seem to trust each other's opinions, and the one we saw tried to sell us services we didn't need. We first saw an older gentleman who told me I needed heartworm medicine for the cats as a preventative measure (a very dear friend of mine has been a small animal vet for over 25 years.. I called him to ask his opinion on the vet's advice because he was our vet for many years and we trust him... He said he can count on one hand the number of cats he's ever seen with heartworms, and p.s. my cats didn't have them at that vet visit). He also told me that one of my cats needed a teeth cleaning. We asked if they groomed because one of the cats has a hairball problem so we shave her once a year and they do, but they don't charge much because they don't have a professional groomer. When I took the cat to the grooming appointment, the front desk staff was on the phone and inattentive, but I filled out all of the paperwork and got a phone call about an hour later letting me know that they wanted to charge me an extra couple of hundred for another vet appointment because a different doctor was there that day (which makes me believe that they don't trust each other's opinions). I said no, so they continued to ask me other questions that should have been addressed when I dropped off the cat... When I pointed out to the vet tech asking the questions that this was unnecessary and that she needed to read the paperwork they had me fill out or talk to me before I left the building, she put the phone down and handed it back to the front desk. The whole thing was incredibly unprofessional... You need to talk to your clientele while they're there with you, especially when talking about what to do if their pet were to die IF they had to be sedated. So, needless to say, we went to find another vet for the teeth cleaning that was recommended at their yearly checkup, (we found one that we love) and the new vet laughed at me a little when I picked up the cat because they said he didn't really need a teeth cleaning for another couple of years because the tartar was superficial and not affecting the bone. Oh well... they got a few hundred dollars and he has shiny teeth now!
