How to Save Money at Crossroads Equine Veterinary Services, LLC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr White has been amazing with my foundered OTTB. Always available to answer any questions I may have, is very thorough, and genuinely cares about your horse. We live in Whitwell and are not covered in his area, but he requested to be kept updated daily. His treatment has been spot on and my boy is well on his way to being sound again. If you are in need of an equine vet, look no further he is the best!

I am an endurance rider and a ride manager, so compete under lots of good vets all over the southeast and I'm picky! I am very satisfied with Dr. White's practice as my primary vet and recommend him to anyone who is new to the area. My head endurance vet usually requires for me to hire vets who are experienced with endurance to be treatment vet at my ride but after he spent the day working with Dr. White he said, "From now on he'll do" which I considered a high praise.

Dr. White of Crossroads Equine has been caring for my horses for more than 10 years. He has seen us through several crises as well as provided our routine vaccines and maintenance care. He is unfailing kind and patient with both myself and my animals, always willing to answer my questions and discuss fees, alternative treatments or care, and continues to monitor my horse's condition until all is well. Although Dr. White has treated the majority of my horses issues himself, I appreciate that he has also referred us to an equine hospital when he felt we would be better served. I am deeply grateful to have him as our equine vet.

I have been using Dr White for over 5 years and I would trust my guys with anyone else. We recently bought our own property from boarding and the first thing I did when we found a home we liked was text Dr.White an make sure we were in his coverage area. Dr.White saved my horses lie last year after a bad illness and I will forever be grateful. If you are looking for a equine vet you can trust and rely on, Crossroads Equine Veterinary Services is the place to call!! My boys trust Dr.White and so do I with all their needs

I can't say enough about Crossroads. Dr. Michael White is a very compassionate and competent equine veterinarian. We were so thrilled when we moved to this area and knew Dr. White was going to be our veterinarian. From the first time he came to our property to today Dr. White has always been on time and more than willing to answer any questions or provide for any needs that our horses, Ranger and Spirit might need. When a year and a half ago when we lost our beloved horse, Rembrandt, Dr. White was there to pray for us and give us his support and solace. We feel that if anyone has the privilege to have Dr. White and his staff at Crossroads they will not be disappointed. Susan and Marshall
