How to Save Money at WellPet Humane

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m grateful for WellPet, it was recommended by a friend. They are reasonably priced and the service is very good. They stay busy so some patience is needed at times, but the were 200.00 less than my old Vet when I had to put my dear Jack Russell down after a 15 year relationship. The vet was kind and respectful. I’ve rescued two dogs and received great care, also diagnosed and worked with me to establish care for Beamer my diabetic Min Pin. Very reasonable price on insulin too.

During one of the most painful times of our lives, the wonderful people at WellPet assisted us with our ailing furbaby. They were kind, compassionate, thoughtful, and professional. I felt like we were among friends rather than in a cold office with strangers. They went above and beyond the base care and respected our emotions.

I had been taking my elderly cat to WellPet Humane for I guess at least 3 years. Dr. Phelps was awesome throughout his treatment, in fact he diagnosed Theo's hyperthyroidism early and we were able to keep our beloved Theo going for another 2 years with special food and medicine, until the kidneys just couldn't work anymore. I can't say enough good things about the folks here. We now have a new kitty, a 3-year old rescue, and we wanted to make sure he is healthy, so we took him in to them this week and did a full exam and blood work panel, including kidney function, just to be sure. Although it seems expensive to me, their charges are actually much more reasonable than other vets I have been to. Because they are a nonprofit they are more affordable. And now they even take Care Credit which is even better because you can spread out the payments. Dr. Tift was great with our new little house panther, Milo, and his health is perfect across the board, so that is a big relief since we are not wealthy and all medical care is expensive these days. I recommend WellPet Humane without hesitation.

I tried to like this vet clinic. It came highly recommended. However, the front desk staff seldom answers the phone. If they do, you’re put on hold a lot. If you come between 12-1:30, the door is locked for a staff meeting though I don’t think that’s on the website. Get ready to wait upwards of 30 minutes to be seen. You don’t get to specify which vet you prefer ever (which I get is probably common, but in this case, it’s why we were going). I never got in or out the door in under 15 minutes, even when I just picked up a prescription. The front desk staff seems disorganized and lackadaisical.

It's really unfortunate to see a trusting health facility for our fur families going down this way. It used to be a place where the docs and the staff are compassionate and concerned with what people have to pay on top of the messed up American health care systems for humans. I have been with this practice near 10 years and it has been going down in its quality of service. And today's visit just nailed in the coffin and I am changing to a different practice. On top of $300 annual exam, they tried to push for an additional test for something that I already know that they already tested and told me that I just have to keep giving medication as it's going to get only worse. The test results wasn't going to change anything. Because the doc kept pushing for an additional test, I had to remind him what they told us and discussed before and the medications that he has been taking for. Finally he looks up the previous records and provided me refill prescription but the process was painful. Also I arrived 20 minutes before my appointment. I saw the staff 20 minutes after appointment and the doctor came in almost an hour later. We waited for song, my son had to go to bathroom. We stepped out to find bathroom, all the staff was gone for lunch break. I had to call loudly "anyone here? Any here???" for good 5 minutes. We felt almost spooky in the dark office. They had customers in the room waiting, waiting.. but who cares. Let's just all leave.. It has become just a number business. No compassion or kindness can be found. I just called few other places to shop around for annual examination, including rabies, DA2PPV vaccine, heartworm test, fecal test. Plenty places said $100-$150. If you have been stuck with Well pet humane like me just because you have been there forever, It might be time to shop around. It's sad for me to say this after so many years with them.
