How to Save Money at Vann's Ferry Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We adore Dr. J. He single handedly saved our Houdini’s life more than once, he has been an advocate for our cancer dog Zelda, and he is gentle and compassionate with our senior doggo Stubbs. You cannot ask for a better vet to have in your life. Go here. Your pet is worth the best and Dr. J is just that.

Dr. J has been taking care of my elderly 15 year old pup for many years and I doubt she would be here without him. Dr. J and his staff are highly knowledgeable and caring. He takes the time to explain what's going on and is patient with any questions you may have. His staff are great with my dog even when she's being grumpy with them. They are simply the best in my opinion. I will be forever grateful for the referral I was given to go there!

We visited for the first time yesterday. The veterinarians were extra kind and attentive to us and our dog Norman. They walked us through many different treatment options and our visit felt very personalized to Norman's needs. Even when first meeting him the veterinarians were very gentle and listened to us and what we had to say. Thank you.

The Wells-Cox Family,

All 4 of my dogs go here (Neo - husky) (Neme - GSD) (Artie - pitty) (Teddy - Boxer) they are absolutely amazing and love them! They help as soon as they can and have helped me when I have found sick and injured pets/ strays that needed assistance. I appreciate this vet and the time we have been here (last 5 - 6 years)

If I could give 10,000 stars I would. Dr J isn’t just an incredible vet but an amazing decent human being. He takes the time that other vets won’t, to explain your pets illness and make sure you understand. He and his team are compassionate and kind and patient with my infant/toddlers who unfortunately misbehave sometimes during checkups. He cares about your fur babies and cares about how you care for them. We moved a county over and wouldn’t change vets regardless of living further away. They are excellent with elderly pets and he has been patient when I’ve been a blubbering hysterical mess through appointments when new diagnosises filled me with fear and panic, he stayed calm and was patient in explaining things. My elderly cat has been under their care since early 2020 when she was diagnosed with an incurable disease, and each year there were more diagnosis and more things going on, and more stress for Me. I could not want a better vet. When we have traveled we have boarded my sick cat with the team as I knew the team genuinely cared about my beloved cat, and I knew if things went bad with my cat while I was traveling that that would be where she would need to be. Over the years I have been so fearful of the day that my elderly cat would pass or possibly need to be euthenaised. The fear of doing it a day too early vs the fear of doing it a day too late.. Dr J kept telling me that I would know when it was time, but I did need to hear it from Him, and on Thursday my beloved cat was euthenaisded at the clinic. I had hoped she would peacefully pass at home in her sleep but the closer the time came it became apparent that making her wait wasn’t right. I knew that Dr Js clinic, where she received love and attention 2nd to of course her home with me was the perfect place to say goodbye All the staff are amazing, and Dr J is amazing My heart is broken but I cannot share praises of this vet and his clinic enough Bless you guys
