How to Save Money at Sycamore Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Legato is very knowledgeable and knows his animals!! He diagnosed and treated my dog quickly. I was afraid she would die but 4 days after starting treatment, she is running around and eating again!! Thank you Sycamore!!

This vet hospital is definitely lacking in the patient care department. The doctor is not capable of finishing an examination without forgetting what he has done already and what he still needs to do. Also, I have never experienced witnessing the doctor speaking to the owner about his examination and treatment plans, but by the end of the conversation he is expressing his financial troubles with the clients!! NOT EXCEPTABLE OR PROFESSIONAL!! And unfortunately there is no loyalty to the employees that have put up with this obsurd workplace environment and management... please if you care for your pets and your intelligence, do not visit this circus, I promise you will leave there feeling less confident about your decision, and your pets deserve better than what they can offer!

I had an emergency poisoning situation with a feral cat I've been working on rehabbing late in the day today. After checking with five or six other vet offices Sycamore was able to work me in with no problem. This was this cats first time with a vet and he was very agitated about being handled for his exam, despite that both Dr Legato and I believe Ansleigh were extremely kind and professional with his care and were able to provide him with what he needed to start recovering. It was also awesome to see them both working so well together. Dr Legato showed a lot of expertise with the medications needed and the best way to successfully administer them given the cat's angry attitude. Experience that wasn't shown or communicated with most of the other vet offices I had talked to today; four of them wanted me to spend $95 talking to the ASPCA poison control line to get advice on the best treatment options before bringing him in. Not to knock that service, but I'm extremely broke and had no way to afford that expense on top of an emergency vet visit. So my experience with Sycamore today left a great first impression and gave me a lot of relief knowing that the cat was in competent (heavily gloved)hands. He's now home recovering and much better off than he was a few hours ago. I'm looking forward to working with their office again in the future. Give them a call!

If they tell you to “drop by anytime we’re open” maybe don’t believe that. I dropped in at 1pm to get my cat a rabies vaccine, but the doctors seemingly take lunch breaks anywhere from 11:30am to 2pm. The receptionist was very nice, but this was still a frustrating experience overall. I did not appreciate the lack of clear communication and don’t feel it is worth making the drive back. If you’re going to drop in, I recommend calling right beforehand to confirm there is a doctor present.

Everybody was very nice and so quick, they brought my dog right in as I walked in the door. My dog felt very comfortable with everybody and that is most important. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for an affordable and reliable vet!
