How to Save Money at Homestead Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was a bit nervous about taking 2 of my 3 cats here since all reviews were from dog owners. After a conversation with Jay, learned Dr Surber has previous experience with the now defunct Cat Clinic in Cumming. I booked an appointment and took Uli & Napa in. I was so pleased that we were immediately taken to a room for cats only. The room had cat toys, treats, places to hide and, even better, calming scent in the air and on the towels and blankets. There is a tv with birds and squirrels eating and chirping. Very calming and stress free for all of us. Lauren & Jay did a pre interview, met the kitties and made sure they were handled gently and lovingly. Dr Surber was the same; gentle, aware of how nervous the boys were and performed tests quickly. Towards the end of the appointment, the boys had calmed down and were looking at the tv and searching the room. All in all, this is not a “line up all pets” in a waiting room or factory style clinic and wait your turn type of vet. This is high quality, take the time to get to know your fur babies in a quiet & safe environment. My boys enjoyed their treats and bandanas. And are proudly showing how brave they are by supporting Dr Surber and staff.

Dr. Surber and her assistant are incredible. My dog's anxiety had been mishandled by several other Dr's in the area and it had gotten to the point he would not let a vet come near him. Previous doctors had said, "he earned a muzzle" and "he was a control freak." Dr. Surber & her staff treated him gently and treated him with kindness & the approach of an animal WITH a problem instead of the mindset that he WAS the problem & a bad dog. We still had to completely sedate him, for his annual exam, but they were kind & gentle. They went to the greatest efforts to keep his exam quiet & non-stimulating so he'd sleep through it. It's a plus that their exam rooms are comfortable and calming. They get on the floor with the animal in a warm living room setup instead of the sterile steel table up in the air. My dog is happy to go in, just doesn't want to be examined. So getting them in the door is half the battle sometimes. If you have a fearful pet, this is the place to take them. They are kind, gentle & very rewarding to the animal's who come through & book enough time for the visit!

Best. Experience. Hands down. We were so excited to check out Dr. Surber's clinic! Many of my family members brought their fur kids (both dogs and feisty cats) to Dr. Surber at a previous location and we knew we had to follow her! The environment of Homestead is that unlike any other. It's cozy and welcoming and you feel like family! It can be extremely chaotic bringing both dogs at the same time (and add a 10 month old to the mix), but I was met with helping hands and smiling faces! Dr. Surber also caught something very important on our FIRST visit that no previous veterinarian was able to identify. Make your switch to Homestead, you won't regret it!

Thank you so much to Dr. Surber at Homestead Animal Hospital! I took my handicapped dog and new kitten to see Dr. Surber for vaccines today! Honestly the best experience at a vet ever! They were so gentle with my dog and did everything on the floor where she was most comfortable. My kitten was so relaxed and had such a positive experience going to her first vet appointment. The rooms are open and clean. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Dr. Surber is so kind and thorough. Definitely a great vet and recommend them 100%

We came into see Dr. Surber with our dog Fellow and had the best experience. I can't imagine a more compassionate veterinarian out there. Highly recommend! They feel like part of the "exit 12" neighborhood of businesses! ♥️🐾
