How to Save Money at Novey Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve taken my dog to Novey for her entire first year of her life. In that one year, she has had a sensitive immune system and has had to go to the vet fairly frequently. I love that at every single visit, the doctors are incredibly diligent and thorough which gives me so much peace of mind. All of the staff, techs, and doctors have always made it a priority for my pup to have a positive experience there. They all know her by name and give her treats and lots of loving so she is always excited to be there. I am always confident that they will take care of her there. I’m so sad that we are moving and will have to find a new vet in another state, because I have never been to a more caring and thorough vet clinic.

Dr. Novey built an amazing animal hospital that shows her passion for animals and their families. When Dr. Hall and Dr. Scarpinato took over, the reliability and and quality of care remained top notch. We’ve been taking our cats and dogs to Novey for over 15 years, and whether we’re there for a routine exam or surgery, we couldn’t ask for better care. The staff is always welcoming and greet us by name when we visit. From our super scared cat who would hide in the corner, to our excited dog who would try to jump over the counter, the veterinarians always cater to the needs of the individual pet. Dr. Hall and Dr. Scarpinato are always willing to sit on the floor with our babies, give them extra butt scritches, and make us feel at home. Most recently, our Tyson (my heart dog) declined in health suddenly and unexpectedly. Dr. Hall and Dr. Scarpinato spent so much time and effort evaluating him and making sure he got the best care. They took the time to explain medical findings thoroughly and answer our many questions. Dr. Hall even snuggled with Tyson on her lunch break and was available after hours when something new came up. Unfortunately, we found that he had cancer and despite everyone’s best efforts, we couldn’t save him. Dr. Hall came to our house and helped us say goodbye. Her compassion and warm-heartedness helped us focus solely on our love for our boy as he crossed the rainbow bridge. From the beginning to the end, Novey Animal Hospital has been there for us and we’ll never take our babies anywhere else.

Louie's first visit as a new patient was a super great experience. Even without an appointment and being a new patient, they worked him in for his eye infection. The doctor and staff are amazing. A detailed call from doctor post exam was most helpful and appreciated. I can't thank them enough for their attentiveness and care towards my little man.

We visited this hospital while on a short vacay. They really work to fit your pet in even if you aren't an established patient. They offer acupuncture and laser therapy to provide supplemental treatment to prescriptions. My dog was treated like a princess while being carried around during her day long observation. Even in a stressful situation, you are calmed because of their expertise, care and concern. Everyone in every role was kind and attentive.

This practice was always pretty okay in the past, no complaints from me for the 6 years I’ve been a client with my other two cats. Dr. Winters is the most memorable vet who was helpful. I’ve just become frustrated with them over the last year because they never seem to have appointments. I wanted my cat to be seen last July for vomiting and they couldn’t see him for entire month so they told me to try another vet. I had to go to Northwood where he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. That’s not Novey‘s fault but I wish I could have found this out during routine care instead of emergency. I recently had to switch to Oakwood because I am trying to get my new kitten seen to make sure her spay incision is okay and Novey couldn’t see me for 10 days. I asked if they had a cancellation list and they said not really; I don’t think there’s any bad intentions behind this, but I just got better service at Oakwood, who called me the next day with a cancellation. I don’t think my kitten’s condition warrants an entire emergency vet visit, but 10 days is also too long to wait for Novey. Not sure if this is just a popular practice or what not but just my experience and an FYI to new pet owners.
