How to Save Money at Malabar Country Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I went here for a number of years and had minimal issues with the place, and just chalked the few issues up to no place being perfect. However, our pet recently had to be put down and when I called asking to speak with the vet, because I had some questions, I was met with extreme, and completely unwarranted, defensiveness that bordered on combativeness in my conversation with the vet. (Please note, the office staff were wonderful and very sympathetic in every way). The conversation with the vet took around five minutes in total, but was horrible right off the bat. Not sure if she was having a bad day and took it out on me or what. However, her behavior was so egregious that during the call I asked her to please stop interrupting and talking over me 3 times, when she did let me speak at one point she promptly interrupted me, and her voice was elevated and extremely excitable. The worse quotes (verbatim) were, "I don't have time for this" meaning the conversation; and she was sarcastic when I said I was concerned about the appointment before I even came, but I felt like I had to come in because my dog was due for a rabies shot, which I thought there were laws about. To that, she actually said "that no one came to my house and dragged me and my dog out and forced us to the appointment". The vet happened to be on speaker phone during this conversation and my husband was shaking his head in disbelief over how rude and callous she was. And, I still have no answers to my questions. I am sorry to say cannot recommend this place to anyone. It is all the worst that they have their motto as "Noah saved them, we care for them". I hoped that perhaps the character of those who worked here actually represented that love and the fruit of the spirit representing self control and peace, but that was sorely lacking in the attitude of the vet. I am still speechless over the lack of compassion. If there is a person who oversees this vet clinic who would like the contact me, that would be wonderful as I still have a couple of questions. Thank you.

Front staff called me early in morning due to a Cancellation and I was really impressed how she got me right in. The vet tech was super awesome with my dog and the Veterinarian was really nice and knowledgeable. I feel Confident coming here for the best care for my dog.

Very welcoming. Was able to get my sick cat in on the same day I called. Due to a cancellation. You could see that the girl who cared for my cat was very experienced. She handled my cat with great care and love.

We had a beloved Veterinarian for our pet who passed away a few years ago. We have tried a few vets in the area and were just disappointed. They were “chop shops” with the only intention to up sell. My pet didn’t matter to them. Malabar Country Veterinary Clinic is the real caring deal. I knew we were in the right place when they were addressing standing customers and pets by name. They took care of and interest in my elderly dog. Even had innovative treatment recommendations that didn’t break the bank. (I was shocked!) 5+ stars!!!! This is what Veterinary care should be.

The veterinarians are amazing. They helped multiple times with my Great Dane puppy who, because of them, is now a happy and healthy 5 month old!
