How to Save Money at OVIEDO VETERINARY CARE AND EMERGENCY

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The absolute best! I have an accident prone mini dachshund that likes to: -eat things he shouldn’t -have allergic reactions to vaccines after his normal vet closes -eats something else he shouldn’t -grow an abscess on his butt in the time it took me to go to the grocery store -did I mention eat things he shouldn’t? I feel beyond grateful for this office. They not only take care of your baby, but they also help you. If I’m there and crying, they soothe me. When my baby is scared, the hold and comfort him. Everyone here is amazing, and I’m not exaggerating when I tell you we’ve been there at least 5 times this year. I know people get upset over the prices, but this is not a normal vet. They work on emergencies. They’re open 24/7. That creates a much larger overhead cost than your normal vet. Just like if I go to the ER, it’s a $300 copay, versus my doctor, which is $25. I highly recommend everyone get pet insurance to help with larger costs like these.

I can't thank the staff enough for their care and compassion for my 3 month old kitten Boo. I came in around 2am after sitting at another emergency vets office for over an hour. Ben the vet tech was so comforting, caring, and affectionate to my stinky little poo covered sick kitten. He was very knowledgeable and great about communicating with me which made me feel like my kitten was in great hands. Thank Ben and Dr. Jones for your hard work in caring for our little girl. My kids are so happy to have their kitten home! If you have a sick fur baby after hours I'd highly recommend this place!

Writing this review late but my dog Kylo came in from having surgery at another facility February 2023 where I was sure he would die if I left him there. Dr. Rivera took Kylo from being gone forever to smiling and living his best life again. The staff were great with daily visits and walks, I will forever be grateful for the love my pup was shown

we took our 15 yr old rescue, Mr Kitty, in for an evaluation. We knew he was not doing good. The staff was attentive and as quick as they could be. Dr Michael Osman was thorough, precise, and compassionate. We will take our sweet boy home and have him leave us in the comfort of his loving home. Would recommend this emergency group to everyone.

My dog has a rare, incurable auto inflammatory disease. The treatment for this disease is unfortunately in any other circumstance- a contraindicated dosage of steroids to suppress the immune system to prevent further inflammation and to slowly let the body heal. Our regular vet was out of office when our boy had a flare up, and a floating vet filled in and saved the day prescribing the medication he needs as recommended by our specialist. However on our recheck last week, at our regular vet, we were advised that we would not be given further prescriptions for steroids, and that we needed to begin tapering off the prednisone. We dropped the dosage as instructed but our boy relapsed and instead of giving him the necessary dose of steroids we were begging for we were given poor attempts at the management of his pain while I watched my dogs condition worsen while I fought and fought for him to get the meds he needed. Due to complications of the other medications prescribed in lieu of the steroids I had been asking for, our boy developed a significant lower GI bleed, which brought us in to see Dr. King last night. I wanted to write this review to thank her from the bottom of my heart. my boy has been immobile for a week and his legs have atrophied I’ve been so concerned we would not be able to make it through this flare. I have hope. Last night she gave him the steroids he so desperately needed. Today, he is walking. It’s short distances. But he is getting himself up to use the bathroom. I am so proud of him. And so grateful to finally see progress, and so thankful to have found a vet who knows this dreadful disease is not a joke. Thank you so much. Riku slept through the night for the first night in a week.
