How to Save Money at Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

An amazing facility who took exceptional care of my 1 1/2 year old Perlino Quarter horse nicknamed “David,” when he came down with a near fatal case of impaction colic, due to not hydrating himself properly. We arrived late in the evening as we had a 2 1/2 hour drive to get there, and Dr. Perez and his team were waiting when we pulled in. David was touch and go for 4 days and they were amazing! Dr. Perez phoned me morning and night each day to keep me apprised of David’s progress, and was caring and straight forward. Thankfully, he did not end up needing surgery, as they were able to continually flush his system to break the impaction loose, while hydrating him and managing his comfort via IV. They were very reasonably priced for an emergency hospital, with extended stay, and compassionate and knowledgeable. They were very patient with loading him to go home, as I’d only had him a few months and he was not accustomed to loading yet. He had been loaded only twice before, once to get to my home, and again under veterinarian supervision and heavy sedation on the day he was emergency hauled to Peterson Smith. They also worked with us financially, even setting us up with a Care Credit card incase surgery was needed. I’d recommend them to anyone with a horse they care about and want the best care for!

I have tried other veterinary practices, but I’ve had all my horses taken care of by Peterson and Smith and they are the only vets I would trust their care with!

Dr Wingo was here within 25mins when our horse started colicking this past weekend. From the moment she got here her demeanor, kindness, patience and willingness to share knowledge was amazing. I was very stressed and she quickly and calmly assessed our horse, gave us a game plan, and had him 150% more comfortable within half an hour. She was patient with our gelding and seemed to genuinely care about him. She gave us great care instructions and made sure all of our questions and concerns were addressed. Dr Wingo was personable and professional and I am very grateful to her for her speedy response to our call! Also, I was impressed with the cost for an emergency colic call on a Sunday night - thankfully it was not too complex of a case but it was definitely reasonably priced. Our horse is back to his normal spunky self thanks to Peterson Smith, and Dr Wingo!

My mare had a traumatic injury and was transported to Peterson and Smith on a Saturday morning. When I arrived to the facility everyone was extremely helpful and very sympathetic towards our situation. She had punctured her left front fetlock and needed immediate surgery. The diagnosis was not very good. However, Dr. Lynch and staff took fabulous care of her and communicated with me everyday during her 10 day stay at the facility. My questions were always answered promptly by the care team. Dr. Meeks has been taking care of her since she left the facility and always makes time to help us. I will forever be grateful for Dr. Lynch and Dr. Meeks. Their knowledge is invaluable. I highly recommend either one of these two vets at this facility. It is now almost two months later and my mare is doing phenomenal! Thank you Dr. Lynch and Dr. Meeks for helping our mare through this traumatic time.
