How to Save Money at Equine Medical Center of Ocala
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Incredible facility with people who genuinely care about your horse! From the moment we arrived (a three hour drive with sick horse in tow), we were greeted by Dr. Pastis and his professional team of helpers! I finally took a breath, confident that my little horse was getting the very best care possible. They ran every possible test, and Dr. Pastis explained what looked good and why other issues might be of concern. Our horse had a serious case of colic with descended colon. Our local vet had recommended EMCO and I will forever be grateful! We were fortunate, and after a night of careful observation, we got the “surgery not necessary.” Dr. Adam’s and Dr. Spagnol were always patient, kind and explained everything perfectly to the “anxious family.” I would never hesitate recommending this top notch facility. After an extra night of observation, we got to take our boy home and I have no doubt it was due to their expertise!

I’m not sure where to start with how much I appreciate everyone at this facility and how amazing they are. I brought my horse Isabella in for sand impaction through the ER. The doctors took her in for evaluation immediately, and were very thorough and clear about everything going on with her. I was an emotional wreck and they were very compassionate and understanding. She went to surgery the next day, and the surgery team was amazing in taking great care of her. The front desk was very patient with me through all of my questions and figuring out finances. The facility is absolutely amazing and a well oiled machine. Thank you Dr. Krause, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Welch, Dr. Cullen, Dr. Pastis, Gayla, Rebecca, and anyone involved. Thank you to every doctor, nurse, care taker, front desk personnel, and management involved. I would have not gotten through this without you all and now my girl is on the road to recovery.

Our first experience with EMCO and our new colt who had choked this weekend. I feel they did a wonderful job and EMCO is incredibly easy to get a hold of and address any concerns I might have had with the process. Which I feel is very rare in any medical field. I definitely trust them for future visits of any of our equine babies. :)

Very rude person answering the phone, did not have the simplest of information to give me and was not willing to find out for me before I scheduled my appt. Told me in a snide way, "ok, ma'am, I hope you have a GREAT day" rather than trying to retain me as a client by being respectful, helpful and pleasant. Customer service training needed, or just get someone who can talk pleasantly to the public.

I can't begin to describe my appreciation to the EMCO team for their help with Cookie when the three of us appeared Friday night in dire straits. Cookie had the large intestine compaction and my husband and I had had an emotional overload of bad news about Cookie's future prognosis after his surgery earlier in the day at Ocala Equine Hospital (another fabulous place with a team who did a wonderful job). With the onset of colic, they recommended EMCO where Cookie needed to be transported to immediately. A special thanks to Dr. Carpenter and the techs that night that dealt with the three of us. Besides knowledge and professionalism, I was blown away by the compassion and caring for all of us as she may have saved Cookie's life. Special thanks also to Dr. Henry and Harrison for the daytime care and compassion they showed the three of us also. They were very kind and patient and allowed me a lot of hang-out time with Cookie. I am forever grateful to you all for saving him as I lost my last horse to colic in 2008. Again, thank you for everything.
