How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

“My dog Leia had a fantastic check-up! Her veterinarian was outstanding knowledgeable, patient, and so gentle with her. The staff was equally wonderful and made the whole experience easy and welcoming. Thank you to the entire staff and especially Dr.Perez and Emily R. Highly recommend this clinic! You all make every visit a positive experience.

I’ve been bringing my dog to the Banfield Pet Hospital in Plaza Alegre for over a year, and the pattern of misinformation, carelessness, and dismissive customer service has become impossible to ignore. For the past month, I’ve called this location multiple times asking for the price of a thyroid exam for my dog. Each time, the staff looked up my account, confirmed I am not an active plan member, and still told me the same price: $60 total. Two of the people who personally gave me this incorrect information were: • Alani, during one of my phone calls • Maria, the manager, who also verified my account status before quoting the same wrong price Today, after receiving the same confirmation over and over, I showed up to finally get the thyroid test done only to be told the real price is $60 for the test + $70 for an office visit. A fee that was never mentioned once during any of my calls. When I pointed out that I had been repeatedly given the wrong information, the response I received was shockingly dismissive. There was no apology, no accountability just a casual “oh, well” attitude, as if the misinformation and inconvenience they caused were not their responsibility. That interaction alone speaks volumes about how little regard they have for their clients and their pets. And unfortunately, this isn’t the first serious issue I’ve had here. In the past, a veterinarian at this same location prescribed my dog the wrong medication dosage, with the incorrect milligrams written on the prescription. Multiple staff members had to get involved before the mistake was finally corrected, and that veterinarian eventually stopped working there. Between a past medical error, ongoing misinformation, surprise fees, and now a dismissive attitude when their own mistakes are brought to their attention, I can no longer trust this hospital with my dog’s care. Every visit feels like a new problem caused by the staff instead of a solution for my pet. After today, I will not be returning to the Banfield in Plaza Alegre. Pet owners deserve accuracy, transparency, and basic professionalism — none of which have been consistent at this location.

I gotta give them credit, they are amazing. I was going to them for a while and decided to try the Banfield on 104 on Kendall horrible mistake everything is a money grab and you can tell it’s just rush service and no real explanation. I was denied a prescription for allergy for my dog bc they only prescribed cyopoint and aqopel and they aren’t even open to other medication. I booked an appointment here for the next day and the vet talked to me for 30 mins on a new treatment plan for my dog. Amazing. Thank you
