How to Save Money at North Polk Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Simply put, this hospital, it's staff, their surgeons, they saved my dogs life. They treated her like she was one of their own and provided the best possible care. I couldn't ask for more. I trusted them with my best friend and they really came through. If you need help for your animals, look no further.

I had an appointment for my dog to see a vet. When we got there, they tried to charge me up front, then they tried to give my dog a cytopoint injection in the lobby. I stopped them and told them we needed to see a vet, which is why we scheduled the appointment. The office manager started arguing with me, then I called and texted Doc Y because she told me to leave. Then her manager called her and she began cursing her manager. This lady is a piece of work! Then a vet takes us in and determines because he was already on apoquil that cytopoint would not have worked! They gave antibiotics and steroids. When I came out she was gone and my bill was less! Always advocate for your pet!

Doc Weirather is a wonderful vet. He is kind, caring and compassionate and does everything he can to make sure your pet is taken care of. As others have made comments on other reviews and sites, the place could use some fresh paint, etc. but It's an old building. I'd go see Doc Y at a dirty barn if it meant him caring for my animals. He's not a vet to get rich. He truly cares about animals and people and makes his prices affordable. He's also a wonderful surgeon and on most nights is at the clinic until way past dark caring for and seeing patients. If you saw how hard he worked and how exhausted he is on some nights, with still more patients to see, you would be truly touched. I will never forget the kindness shown by doc Y and his staff when my baby Bella needed help. They all showed up on their day off and they did everything they could to save her. Unfortunately she still passed away but I will be forever grateful for their effort. There are no words to express my gratitude. I feel truly blessed to have found this vet, especially being so close to my house and the fact that I have 8 dogs and 2 cats. I wish there were more humans like him. Also, he’s a wonderful role model. My daughter wants to be a vet and she deeply respects him and appreciates and notices his sacrifice and kindness.

I called yesterday as my dog Teddy was not feeling well. They were able to see me in 15 mins via my phone call. Left yesterday knowing my dog was going to be ok with an ear infection and he rec’d a shot so he doesn’t itch and lick his paws. Today Teddy is doing much better and so happy that North Polk Animal Hospital could see Teddy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dr. Y & his Team are the best! My experience with North Polk Animal Hospital is absolutely the best experience I've ever had with any veterinarians. Dr. Y's knowledge; experience; and desire to help animals is really quite remarkable. He saved my goats life. My goat is a female goat named Cupcake, she had a baby goat and nursed her for six months and her udder ended up with something called gangrenous mastitis, which means she had gangrene in her udder. We had another veterinarian out to see our goat twice, before we took her to Dr. Y, he did an immediate surgery on her that saved her life. He taught us and his team how to continue treatment for her, he continued to help Cupcake with whatever she needed and she's doing very well! One of the best days ever was the day we could bring her back to her baby goat! I strongly feel that no one else would have had the skills or knowledge or desire to help me with my goat the way that Dr. Y has. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Dr. Y from the bottom of my heart! Your the best!
