How to Save Money at University of Florida Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We saw an ophthalmologist for our Great Dane at the clinic at the WEC. The clinic was very clean, nicely maintained. The staff was very nice. They were very friendly and helpful. The doctor and nurse handled him with such wonderful care. The staff and clinic staff were all extremely professional, the wait time was super minimal, and they were great with my dog. I couldn’t ask for anything more! The cost of the visit was very reasonable as well. We will definitely use them again in the future.

Fantastic ER and amazing surgical and critical care teams. Aspen has a liver shunt that needed to be repaired and was having neurological issues because of the shunt. He seized about 12 hours after surgery and the vet student on Aspen’s team spent an entire day sitting next to his cage, untangling his tubes as he started to come to and walk around his cage (he is blind and needed the tubes moved the entire time). The team was in contact with me constantly and they saved Aspen’s life. We are now home after surgery, on medical management, and it’s like Aspen was never sick. I would drive 3+ hours to this hospital a million times more if my pets needed it, I cannot recommend this hospital enough.

To sum this up we had a great experience until we didn’t. My dog was being seen in the cardiology department. After spending thousands of dollars on test our boy was set up with a 24 hour Holter monitor to make sure that the medication they started him on was working consistently as he was having life-threatening issues. He needed to wear it for 24 hours and then we would send it in to a company out in California via FedEx two day delivery, and that they would clean up the results and send it back to University of Florida and then the University of Florida would contact us with the results. I sent the Holter immediately after his 24 hour period again with two day shipping. This was back on August 21. It is now October 3 and I have called periodically to the University of Florida to check in to see if we receive the results yet. Every time I called I was told no, it wasn’t until this morning when I took it upon myself to call the company out in California that reviewed his heart monitor results. They informed me that they have a 24 hour turnaround time and that they could confirm that they did send the University of Florida results on August 24th!!!! I called the University of Florida and all they’re telling me is that someone will call me later. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating this is if it was just a minor health issue. It wouldn’t be a big deal, but this is my dogs HEART we are talking about. So now I am currently waiting for a callback when they have the results that I’ve been waiting for for a week and a half. Someone dropped the ball and someone needs to be held accountable as to why I was not given these results sooner. I called this morning before I found out that they had the test results and they told me they didn’t?! Again, these results would let us know if the medication was working on his life-threatening heart condition so to be put on hold for a week and a half because somebody dropped the ball is inexcusable.

This place seems to have a great reputation and I just can't understand why. My dog had a serious spine injury and I took him in here. What I found, was a bunch of dumb, well-meaning kids playing hospital. They tried to rush me into a $10,000 surgery and I left thinking that there was no other options and that I would have to put him down. Found a Brazilian vet in Orlando area who was amazing and suggested trying steroids, something that was NEVER mentioned ONCE at UF. Within 4 days of taking steroids, my dog started walking again. That says a lot about this place when a cheap bottle of steroids is the fix yet they lead you to believe that they only option is to hurry up and put a down payment on an expensive surgery. Again, I don't want to bash the kids themselves, they don't have enough real world experience to really be the people to help your pets when they really need it. This place is officially RED FLAGGED.

ZERO STARS DO NOT RECOMMEND. My puppy recently had a seizure and the UF emergency clinic was the only thing open at the time the seizure occurred.(I later found out the urgent care vet clinic was open) I rushed my puppy to the UF ER where we were met with “students” who will be caring for my 2000$ puppy. I was asked a bunch of questions about chemicals and drugs she may have gotten into . My response was a strong no for all questions. The student nurses were very angelic and nice. The primary vet on call was very adamant my dog got into “THC” which I do not own nor have any near my house . They kept beating around the bush and asked me 4 different times about test they could run when I told them the first time to run every single test possible to figure out what was wrong with my baby. My puppy toxicology report came back with no THC or any other drug and or chemical in her system. They did a panel of 4 diff type of test , toxicology being one of those 4. I asked for a nuero test to be done that was not done but they did a respiratory infection test I did not know about or condone too (I’m not complaining they did it but I was consulted 4 times before test where done and and this was not mentioned) I feel my dog was being neglected of care by how many times the vet left my puppy to “consult” with me after I have told them repeatedly to run every single test they can. They kept consulting the amount and the payments of each test which I did not care the amount . They than come out and tell me my puppy is acting very aggressively and making it harder for them to do these test (she’s 13 weeks old and are they not trained for scared/reactive dogs? Again she is a 13 week old puppy ) My puppy was in the vet for roughly 9 hours with no solution as to why she had a seizure or if they would occur again and when I got her discharge papers the cause of seizure was “suspected THC” yet she didn’t have any in her system? I asked to see results of all test and have them printed out and attached to her discharge papers. Well apparently the toxicology report “isn’t able to be printed out and it’s just something they don’t have the ability to record and print” I’m a young girl and feel as if I was stereotyped and judged by the whole staff and they assumed I couldn’t afford to pay the bill for the test so they asked repeatedly (Atleast 4 times) if I want these test ran. Once I got aggravated I asked to keep my card on file and they can charge it as they go but than it was “no we have to draw up her discharge papers inorder for me to pay” I did not get all copies of test and results like requested and still do not have a solution as to what is wrong with my pup. If you value your pet and love your pet I highly recommend urgent care vet clinic for any pet emergency. UF small animal hospital should no be praised as high as they are and they should have a veterinarian who is less judgmental and more willing to help your animal and find a accurate solution. I do not know how they are still in business and I did read reviews before hand only to hope and pray they where not accurate but unfortunately all the bad reviews are very much accurate and very much true.
