How to Save on Veterinary Costs at UF Small Animal Hospital

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

This has been by far my most unpleasant insecure and unreliable experience. I have ever had with any of my animals in an emergency setting. Few days I go I brought my Bella to Ocala location . Was told she was carrying 7 babies and that the only thing she had was high glucose . Days later My Dachshund goes into labor the first baby was not coming out . I called UF in Ocala I explained everything and asked clerk to consult with doctor to see what I should do. Well she didn’t speak to a physician and simply stated to bring her in. First puppies shoulders were stuck according to the center in Ocala and the puppy though still in moms wound was already dead. They tell me there’s nothing they could do because they don’t do deliveries. Charged me $275 for an iv catheter and labs . To then tell me I had to drive 45mts to Gainsville with my dog in the middle of labor . I explained to please send all my dogs labs and procedures done at Ocala location so they wouldn’t have to repeat it. None of that was done because labs were done twice and charged twice. I was told my deposit would be x amount and balance x amount. Was told to go home because it would be a long process and someone would call me . No one called so I decided to return to facility. The last puppy was not born yet so I waited another hour or so . After the doctor comes out states all puppies were born except the one that past and mom was good too. As I went to check out the clerk gives me a different balance and tells me it’s because they had to run different labs. I refused to pay as none of that was explained by doctor. The girl was very Andy did not allow me to finish talking every time I kept asking her to explain things that I was not understanding on the charges. Finally my dog and her babies were handed to ne . I drove home and just as I was arriving to my house. They called and said that the remains of the deceased puppy had to be gotten rid of. Either by them cremating the puppy and charging me another $100 something or I could come back for puppy and bury it in my yard. It’s like they had no compassion for my situation they could care less wether my dog and all her puppies died. All they care about was that the services rendered got paid. They come out to lobby and talk about your business in front of everyone. I hope ppl read these reviews and realize the only good thing about this veterinarian center is that they are open 24 hours. Four of the “6” or “7” puppies is what I was given including my deceased puppy a lot of attitude and no communication with pet owners to discuss what they should do..

I cannot put into detail how appreciative and thankful i am for UF and the staff. My Australian shepherd, apollo, has had epilepsy for most of his life. But the other night he had 22 seizures almost in a row- we brought him to the ocala location and they were absolutely horrible to us here. We ironically already had an appointment with neurology in Gainesville the day after all of this was happening- so after being comfortably stabilized in ocala around 1am we decided to go home and wait until appointment time in gainsville to bring him in.. as soon as we walked in the door and checked in for the appt we were taken to a room. The doctor took maybe a few minutes to come in. She went over everything very in depth and let us know they would be keeping him overnight for observation and further testing. His stay did end up being extended. They called us at least twice a day with very detailed updates on him and his condition. They also took pictures of him during his stay for me, like while he was getting an acupuncture session. Before being discharged they went over everything again and made sure we understood it all crystal clearly. Overall they were just so kind, caring, compassionate, and helpful. Apollo is a very anxious boy, so the fact that he was loving on them and asking for pets as we were leaving tells me absolutely everything i need to know. ❤️ He’s home now and while still not 100%, I have uf to thank for him still being here at all.

They saved my little boy’s life. He was sent home from somewhere else and they were the second opinion that saved him. He had a blockage and had eaten almost nothing for several days. We didn’t know what we were going to do. They don’t offer payment plans (I don’t know that anywhere in town does anymore), but they had a few different options that helped us find the funds to take care of him. Not to mention I was blown away by how low-cost everything was! You even get a discount if you are a UF student or employee. Every person at every level gave us the perfect balance of kindness and professionalism every step of the way. It has been so hard to not have him with us while I know he is hurting and afraid, but I was able to breathe a little bit knowing he was in good hands. I plan to start bringing all of my other dogs here as well! I cannot thank them enough. They have the largest amount of veterinary professionals under one roof in the entire state of Florida and it absolutely shows.

I just wanted to give Connor & Dr. Roberts a shout out (in the necropsy) department! They assisted me with getting some closure and clarification on what caused my baby Scamp to suddenly pass. Connor took really good care of him & was very professional when I dropped him off for his last vet visit. Here are some pics of him to honor his memory ❤️

I brought my six year old dachshund to UF literally dead from being poisoned. Completely unconscious with an extremely low expectation of recovery. They are miracle workers!!! The cost was minimal and I was able to pick up my only baby in less than 24 hours! Walking with full eye sight and completely back to himself! Unbelievable! I am astonished! You will not find better vets for a reasonable price!!! I can’t thank you enough! Extremely knowledgeable!!!
