How to Save Money at The Veterinary Center At Hunters Crossing

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Brandenburg and her staff are always excellent, and go above and beyond for my pets. Dr. Brandenburg did surgery on my dogs back leg after he was hit by a car (when she was based out of Keystone Heights), and he is better than ever! She also closely monitored his diabetes, which isn’t always easy. The same day appointments the clinic offers is a lifesaver, and we are usually in and out. Everyone is so kind, personable, and caring. We wouldn’t take our pets anywhere else!

Just wanted to give a quick shout to our vet, Dr. Brandenburg. We’ve been taking our dog, Apollo, and cat, Milo, here for years. The new owner, Dr. Brandenburg, has been fantastic with both of our pets. She’s extremely knowledgeable and caring! Also, we never felt pressured to tack on additional treatment. I’ve definitely had experiences at other vet clinics with “sticker shock” and that doesn’t happen here. Our Apollo LOVES going to the office as he gets lots of attention! Thanks to all the staff, we appreciate you!

The new owner, Dr. Brandenburg, has been fantastic with our nervous (and extra) pit bull throughout a series of urgent and intense treatments. The entire staff is so friendly, responsive and phenomenal with animals. We've spent a lot of time at this vet recently and have been so impressed with the level of care our pup has received. Very grateful to have found this team.

Our cat Finn was suffering. He couldn't breathe. We didn't want to put him through the extra suffering of doing all these crazy procedures just to find out that he had cancer or a tumor- something we would not pursue treatment for. Euthanasia was shot down twice and we ended up spending money for useless attempts when I think Dr. Brandenburg knew it was slapping a Band-Aid on something that these attempts would not fix. Our cat ended up coming home to suffer for longer, just to end up taking him to the UF Emergency vet that night to put him to rest. No one called the next day. My wife had to reach out to the office manager who honestly just stuck up for the vet and took no accountability in how they should have approached the situation differently and taken our wishes for our cat into account. Come to find out, Dr. Brandenburg is the new owner- how will there be any accountability? With great power comes great responsibility. We know he was just a little cat, but he was our family member whom we loved dearly. We could not bare to watch him suffer any longer. We wonder, how could this veterinary office not recognize a dying and suffering animal? When we brought him to the UF Emergency that night, they said he was severely suffering and we were doing the right thing by ending his suffering. The caring thing. My wife did not want to leave a negative review in hopes of speaking to the office manager to stick up for our cat and gain some closure but instead was met with defensiveness and lack of empathy. This was our experience. P.S. One silver lining - the veterinary tech who took care of Finn that day was extremely caring and a wonderful person. Listened to my wife and all of our wishes that we had for Finn. Thank you.

Everyone here is SO kind. They’ve gotten me in last-minute for emergencies, they always answer all my questions without talking down to me, and they never make me feel rushed out. Highly recommend.
