How to Save Money at Harris Veterinary Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough good things about Harris Veterinary Medical Center! The clinic was spotless and you could tell they pay great attention to detail in everything they do. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional from the moment we walked in. Dr. Harris and vet tech Jessie even got down on the floor to help my dog Phoebe feel more comfortable—she can be nervous around some men, but she absolutely loved Dr. Harris! It was so heartwarming to see her relaxed and happy during her visit. Dr. Harris is not only highly skilled and compassionate, but he truly goes above and beyond for his patients and the community. He provided critical surgery to a veteran’s service dog at a reduced cost so the dog could continue helping his veteran. That level of care and dedication is so appreciated. I highly recommend Harris Veterinary Medical Center to anyone looking for top-notch veterinary care!

We cannot recommend Dr Harris and his team enough! The office is beautiful, clean and modern. The staff is friendly and ready to assist, very knowledgeable and great with the animals. Dr Harris, as always, is compassionate and knowledgeable, making recommendations best for our pets but keeping our budget in mind as well. We are so excited for his practice to take off and are grateful to have found him in Gainesville! And all of our animals love him.

Dr Brian Harris has always been the ABSOLUTE BEST for all the years I have been with him. He is really kind and personable. He always listens to your concerns and thoughts and preferences with regard to care. He truly loves the animals (you’d think this is a given for vets, but it isn’t). He is extremely knowledgeable. He embraces that I have another vet for Eastern medicine. His new clinic is amazing. All of the staff are personable and friendly. It’s comfortable, fresh, and clean environment. The location is pretty centrally located for most of Gainesville. Harris has always done my dogs’ exams on the floor where an animal is most comfortable (the room has an exam table that flips up out of the way, but I doubt it is used very often). Currently they are doing a free first exam. And check-out was done in the room. Which I loved because trying to check out at the front desk is always a hassle with my two dogs trying to socialize with others in the waiting room. And if all of that doesn’t convince you, then know that my mobile/in home/ Eastern medicine vet takes her pets to see Dr Harris when she needs things done that can only happen in a brick and mortar location.

I've known Dr. Harris since he was a tech and vet student. He has compassionately, competently, and warmly cared for our several rottweilers and cats for many years. I am so glad he now has his own center. Can't say enough good things other than thanks and congratulations

Dr. Harris and his staff showed extreme skill, kindness and compassion towards my dog. Each of the staff members took their time with her which led to a five star experience at this practice. The office itself is immaculate, beautifully laid out and very accessible. This is a private practice, not a corporate conglomerate which is evident in every facet of their service. I Highly recommend them for absolute top-notch and compassionate pet care.
