How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Mid-Florida Large Animal Veterinary Services

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Dr Herrera has been taking care of all my horses, cows and now goats for nearly 15 years. Him and his wife Dr Ellis have always been not only helpful and compassionate but supportive in the moments we all dread with our animals. For as long as they are in business I will only use them or who they recommend. Having a good relationship with them for my animals has been a blessing and taken a weight off my shoulders. I’ve called them at just about every hour day or night and they have never failed to show up and help in any way they could. From telling me “not to worry, it’s not such a big deal” and advising how to safely treat an issue at home to referring me to UF for removal of a tumor from a horse’s eye, I know I can trust them to give me the safest and best course of treatment and care for my animals. Both my daughters have grown up watching them and now are studying to be vets also, and I truly believe they have had the best example from Herrera and Ellis. There are just not enough words to express my gratitude for them.

This team of vets are extremely caring and beyond professional and helpful! They’ve come to our rescue many times when our horses have had colic, illnesses, and they’ve also performed numerous tests to give us peace of mind when needed. They also do our horses dentals, and they enjoy teaching you to recognize issues with your horses!! For those complaining about the vets going on vacation, and not giving a back up? I’ve used several vets, and they ALL go on vacation and recommend other vets, and then the back ups aren’t responsive. So no thank you. Vets deserve a life and time off as well. My advice is to get established with more than one vet, just in case. Very trustworthy, and we couldn’t do without them. We highly recommend!!!

Dr. Ellis is responsive, professional, and flexible. She communicates throughout the entire equine PPE process so that out of state buyers can trust her as a patient advocate and make an informed decision. She has great interpersonal skills with the client while maintaining objectivity in assessing the horse. Her 20 years of experience and background credentials like employment with Piedmont Equine Practice of VA, bolster her credibility. If you’re looking for an equine vet in the Lake County FL area I’d highly recommend Dr. Ellis.

Did not share flexion results when completed PPE, when asked was told nothing significant. Later to find out horse had positive flexion which buyer would have paid for radiography and ultrasound. Later to find out that the horse has a past injury that deems it w/t only and can't be fixed. Also PPE had information seller did not disclose to buyer. While this is also the fault of us as buyers of the pony, Dr. Ellis should have shared all results when asked and not said nothing significant was found, as horse was described to cross fire. Be more thorough and descriptive, wish I would have been present and never trusted Dr. Ellis.

Dr Ellis is amazing. I have seen her work with many animals in the last couple of years and now with my own. She came out late evening to help us with a horse that was colicking as well and checked in with us throughout the night and next days. I have also seen Dr. Herrera do dentals on horses and he is so patient. Cant ask for a better team!
