How to Save Money at Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dog was hospitalized by Dr. Edwards and given fluids/meds/testing. Was told I would be called with results and plan of care in "a couple of hours." Was never called. I called after 3 hours-no return call. Called at 4 hours and spoke briefly with vet tech who told me it was up to me if I wanted to pick my dog up that night or the next day. Decided to get my dog. Was told to come at a set time, so assumed we would speak with vet. Instead was handed a $650 itemized bill and my dog with no harness or leash. I had to ask for a diagnosis, print out of lab results, whether or not we should continue meds, and whether or not we needed a return visit. Asked for a call back. Dr. Edwards told me since my dog had only been hospitalized for 5 1/2 hours it was not reasonable for me to expect to speak with her since I had spoken once with the ICU vet tech. "Many dogs are hospitalized for 12 hours or more." Said she had answered my questions through the tech. Could not tell me how many liters of fluids my dog had received, said I should "just look it up on my bill." Was told my expectations were unreasonable. Will not be returning.

We took our dog Sassy to Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital for a swollen mouth and come to find out she had a bad tooth that was infected. They put her on antistesia and they safely removed her two teeth that she had left in her mouth. We were extremely pleased with the results and she is now doing fine. She’s back to her playful self again and eating like a horse! She’s like a family member and we would do anything to protect her and keep her safe and we felt very comfortable leaving her with this veterinary hospital. Thank you to the kind staff that helped us with her and took care of her while she was there for the removal of her two teeth.

I recently had stopped going to my previous vet because the doctor K9 Loki use to see is no longer there, so I have made Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital K9 Loki's full time vet, the doctors are great and willing to work with you. When I find a vet tech that is good with a working Belgian Malinois I stick with that vet tech each time. Every 30 days I take Loki in to see vet tech Lady who is amazing with Loki and cutting solid black nails without making Loki bleed or him wanting to eat her. I schedule an appointment for 30 days out at the end of each visit. My last appointment Lady forgot she was off the day she told me to come in so she drove into work on her day off just to cut Loki's nails and then leave. That's respect and loyalty in my book! I recommend Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital for everyone they are local and great!
