How to Save Money at VCA Newark Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I woke up to my dog having a hot spot on his neck and I immediately made an appointment at VCA Newark Animal Hospital. We had been here once before a few years ago for the same issue. Of course this all happened on a Saturday, so when we arrived, the Vet was extremely honest that they didn't have the staff to get the whole procedure done before they closed, which was pretty soon. He was trying to come up with multiple options that would work for us and our budget, and the health of my dog. We eventually decided on going to an animal hospital right over the line in PA and the vet even called for us to check on the prices, if they could take my dog, etc. To help out, the vet also gave my dog an calming medication to help for the car ride up to PA. Even though we weren't able to get my dog treated here, the caring nature of the vet and the staff and the fact they still went above and beyond to help us find a solution...I will 100% go back if ever needed.

Took my dog in for an emergency because no other vet would take her same day and her ears were inflamed. They were just lovely! Everyone there was so kind and gentle with my fur baby. The vet came in and explained everything and broke down the bill before coming up with a treatment plan with me, which I really appreciated because other vets will just treat and hand you a huge bill, not VCA they will work with you and help you make the best choice. I will only be going here from now on. After an hour my dogs ears went from red to normal pink and she was so much happier. I can’t say enough good things about this place!

Let me clarify my rating. Dr. Carothers and the rest of the staff are a 10, hands down! Here's why I give them 3 stars.... cost! As an example, it's $41.05 to have your pets nails clipped, really?! Thats highway robbery and absurd. They should be ashamed of themselves. Maybe, if they lower their fees they might get more customers. Has VCA checked out the economy? You should place in difficult situations.

I've taken my three cats here for the past 14 years. It's true that there are less expensive veterinarians in the area, but every interaction I've had with everyone here has been really positive. They have always done their absolute best to care for my cats and present all of my options along with the potential risks and benefits. There have been times when being aggressive with testing and treatment has been in the cats' best interest, and there have been times when the stress and risks of certain testing and treatment options really wouldn't improve the cats' quality of life, and I genuinely appreciate that the veterinarians here are so open with that. They are extremely responsive to prescription refill requests, and while there are emergency appointments, they're usually able to work us into a regular appointment slot within a day or two if it's not urgent. Also, there are soft tissues in the exam rooms and nothing but compassion for pet parents facing heartbreaking situations, which I sincerely appreciate.
