How to Save Money at VCA Cromwell Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

In our moment of need you were there for us. It was closing time but our cat had just been struck by a car and we had just moved here and didn't know where to go. Our new vet wasn't answering. You said come in anyways we will wait. And you handled us with care and concern. From start to finish. Thank you.

Let me just start my review by saying we LOVE the doctors and techs here. They are so great with our beloved pet, and we truly feel that overall this is a great veterinarian office. This review is regarding the *grooming* service specifically. The experience we had with the grooming service unfortunately does not reflect the positive feelings we have about the vet. Firstly, when we booked an appointment we were advised that a sample needed to be dropped off for testing prior to them being able to perform the grooming. This was fine but we weren’t told at any point how much it would be, and it came out to $75. We of course knew it would cost money but it just seemed strange nobody told us beforehand. For some that’s a significant amount of money so a heads up would have been nice. Secondly, we were not a fan of the groomer or her ‘bedside manner’. She didn’t introduce herself to us when she came out to meet us in the lobby, and she didn’t address our cat or say hello before unzipping the carrier to reach in and touch her. Most people who work with animals would understand that the vet can be a stressful environment and being immediately poked and prodded by a strange set of hands may have not been the best way to begin an interaction. It may seem nitpicky but usually someone who is a service provider for animals introduces themselves to the animal for comfort and safety reasons prior to handling them. The final bit that was bothersome is that at no point were we told that we could not be present for the process. It would have been nice to know prior to booking the service and paying for the sample testing that we wouldn’t be able to be in the room to comfort our cat as this was an incredibly stressful situation for her. In all honesty I did not feel very comfortable leaving her there with the groomer given the interaction we had before being told to come back ‘in a few hours’, but the fact that we trust the techs and other staff at the office was the only reason we left her. That, and the money we’d already put down and likely a penalization fee if we’d cancelled last minute. Ultimately the service got done; she is a long haired cat and had some matting so that needed to be taken care of. She was pretty shaken up by the whole thing when we picked her up. All that was done by the groomer was shaving of the matted areas and there was no styling or anything additional done and it still wound up being $102, which seems exorbitant so the value of the service was also not great. It seems a lack of communication, and general tone of the groomer herself, could use some improvement to help both the people and animals that use this VCA for grooming services to feel more comfortable.
