How to Save Money at Raintree Animal Hospital Timnath

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m gonna keep it short and to the point, so that I don’t ramble on and on. I had the best experience at Raintree Animal Hospital Timnath! My cattle dog/kelpie mix, Piper, was diagnosed with cancer on 10/25. Obviously; I’m devastated and scared. I have an amazing vet at ParkHill veterinary Clinic in Denver. She referred me to Treeline Veterinary Cancer Care, in Boulder and THEY are amazing!! This all comes full circle as Treeline referred me to Raintree in Timnath and I just want everyone to know how I got to this point. I am so lucky to have be lead to all of these amazing people but I have got to send a huge shout out Raintree Animal Hospital. My dog can be very picky about who touches her and she’s definitely a high strung dog. With so many appointments back to back to back; I was worried for how she may react. She Loves the ladies she met at Raintree. They were super caring and very patient (with both of us lol) They saw me on a Tuesday, heard my concern of wanting my dogs ear removed asap, made it happen the next day, and gave me back a beautiful , happy dog. Her stitches look so good. She’s healing so well, and they made sure to send me my invoice for insurance, exactly how I requested it to be sent. They reached out to me check in on Piper and I found that really awesome! If you need a vet in Denver , oncologist in Boulder and/or a surgeon in Timnath. These are now MY recommendations. Dr. Barrera have a huge shout out to her team and recognized that they are the key to all of the successful surgeries and saving of lives and I thought that was really remarkable to acknowledge in conversation and so I also want to say -Thank you so much Dr. Barrera &team!!! -Piper and I

I have a “medically gifted” boy, Wilbur, that has had a mixture of issues. He has an ophthalmologist, orthopedic surgeon, and internal medicine specialist on his care team. We have been through numerous veterinary clinics and doctors in the area trying to secure the best care for him. Raintree has been a blessing in our journey of navigating his care. They LISTEN. Going through every diagnosis, every symptom, every prior visit, as many times as it takes for them to see the whole picture. They work great with other specialists in the area, which is necessary, as my pups care requires numerous specialists. They genuinely care about him and work to make him comfortable with every visit. We did daycare one day and he was too anxious to play with other dogs so they took him to the vet staff, which he knows well at this point, to get interaction and attention instead of just leaving him in the kennel all day. I appreciate when the DVM’s say “this is beyond my scope, let me touch base with the specialist and get back to you”. Having a complex needs dog, that one statement brings so much peace to my heart as one wrong dosage or missed intervention can make my dog’s health decline. I feel lucky to have found such a thorough clinic for routine care.

I’m leaving this review to help other pet owners make an informed decision before bringing their pets here. I recently planned to board my dogs at Raintree Animal Hospital and ran into several red flags that confirmed why this clinic has a reputation for being extremely expensive. Before boarding, I updated my dogs’ vaccines at another location—knowing Raintree’s prices are typically very high. For example, I paid less than half the cost for their exams and vaccines at the other clinic compared to what Raintree charges. When I brought the updated records to the front desk, I was told they require an additional vaccine that most other boarding facilities don’t even ask for. This felt like an unnecessary upcharge. When I asked to schedule a quick tech appointment for that one vaccine, I was told they wouldn’t administer it because my dogs hadn’t had a physical exam with their clinic in over a year. I had literally just come from a wellness exam at another licensed veterinarian and brought the full medical notes and updated vaccine records to give them. Even with this documentation, stating that my dogs were in good physical health, they insisted I’d have to pay for another wellness exam at their clinic—over $300+ —just to get the single vaccine. I understand wanting to ensure an animal is healthy before vaccination, but refusing valid, same-day medical records from another vet isn’t about care—it’s about policy that drives unnecessary costs to the customer. When I questioned this, the staff simply repeated, “That’s our policy,” and even acknowledged that most other facilities don’t require the extra vaccine and I was welcome to go somewhere else. That in itself says a lot. This experience only reinforced my feeling that this clinic prioritizes upselling and overcharging over fair local care. I won’t be giving Raintree my business, and if fair pricing and ethical practices matter to you, I strongly suggest looking at other boarding and veterinary options in the area.

There are plenty of options for vet care in Northern Colorado, but I will always choose to see Dr. Nelson when possible. She is professional, knowledgeable, genuinely caring and compassionate to animals, and makes real connections with people and pets alike. My Labrador Antigua thinks she is just one of the best people around and is always delighted to see her. Dr Nelson has cared for 8 puppies I have raised for Guide Dogs for the Blind and has always gone out of her way to provide the highest quality of care to these future canine hero’s. Further, I have been highly impressed with the reception staff at Raintree who have such a difficult and thankless job but have been so easy and wonderful to work with. Today our vet tech was Carter, and he was clearly very skilled, and genuinely enjoyed his job and helping to care for Antigua. Antigua gives Raintree Two Paws Up!
