How to Save Money at Rocky Mountain Small Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been with Dr Tancher and Rocky small animal hospital since 1991 and the care we receive has been professional, caring and loving towards our family. Our pets have received the best care and when it became “that time” everyone were so grateful to have been a part of our family and pet’s life and cried with us. So thankful to have his team taking care of us.

If you love your pets, take them elsewhere. My family brought our pets here since Dr. Tancher opened his first clinic in a small storefront next door to Cub Foods on Broadway and Mineral in the early 1990s. He and his team lovingly cared for generations of our pets. Sadly, Rocky Mountain Small Animal Hospital has been purchased by a corporation and all of the original staff has left the practice. This new group is unhelpful and concerningly disorganized. We took each of our two dogs in to the new group one time where they performed their annual exams, administered vaccinations, and prescribed medications for each dog. Before leaving, we scheduled a nurse appointment for the required second booster vaccine for one of our dogs. However when we showed up, they did not have a nurse present to actually administer the vaccine. Although this was completely their error, their solution was to tell us we needed to start the series over again at our cost. Then when I called to refill the medications that had been prescribed by them only a month earlier, they had no record of those prescriptions and said that I had to bring the dogs back in and pay for examinations in order to re-prescribe the medications. This is Rocky Mountain Small Animal Hospital in name only.

I used to drive over 45 minutes to this clinic because the quality of care my pets received from the Tanchers and their staff was exceptional. They saved my dog’s life. The clinic was recently purchased by a corporate entity and has gone completely downhill. Appointments are booked out for weeks because most of the previous doctors and technicians have left the clinic, and there is no one left to accommodate the needs of long time clients. It appears the new management drove everyone out. Very disappointing.

I have gone here for over 20 yrs. It is a 45 min drive and a little more expensive but I loved the staff. A new company took over and when I called to have them see my cat for her eye they refused. They kept telling me to take her to an emergency vet. I was practically begging to be seen. 😭 They have always taken care of any issue my pets have had. Change is hard, but they have lost me as a client.

We used to travel over an hour to board our pets here and have vet services. We tried calling to have our pets boarded and updated on shots, only to be told it was a 6 week wait and we couldn't board our pets unless they were up to date on vaccines. Looking at recent reviews , and a quick Google of the new practice manager's name,Jenee Shipman,I am disgusted they (MVP) would allow such an awful women to take over this loved family practice. To say I miss the care and love the Tanchers and staff gave my pets is an understatement. My pets will be going else where for care
