How to Save Money at River Valley Gateway

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I feel that any words I write here do not come close to expressing my wife's and my gratitude toward Denice and Josh for their care, compassion, and respect for my best friend, but I will try anyways. Buddy was my first dog, brought home at eight weeks, rarely not at my side throughout the next 11 years of his life. Thanks to River Valley Gateway, he enjoyed his final morning under the shade in his backyard, being held, petted, and reassured that he was the best boy. Denice was immensely patient and understanding as she helped my wife and I through the process, made sure we knew what was coming next, ensuring we knew he could still hear us, and just allowing us to take our time through one of the most difficult experiences of my life so far. When we came to see his cremation and say one final goodbye, Josh ensured that we were prepared for what we would experience. He walked us through each step in the process, while consistently checking to ensure we were prepared for, and wanted to participate in, as much or as little as we needed. It has been a blessing to have this experience, and worth so much more than what they generously charge for their services. I was so grateful to have his sister, Sasha, get to see and smell him so that she could process his absence alongside my wife and I. It was never even a concern that she was present throughout it all. I honestly feel that I was treated as family with the amount of care and concern everyone at River Valley Gateway shared with my wife, myself, and Sasha. It was a blessing to have this be part of his end of life story. I am forever grateful to Denice, Josh, and their entire team for what they gave to us. Thank you.

Today we put our handsome boy to rest. Definitely not a easy decision for anyone to make. Denice was amazing, she came to our house and she helped make the process easier for us all. She helped us understand everything she was doing, and helped our boy feel as comfortable as possible. He has always been in good hands, from his beginning to his end. Thank you so very much, I will recommend y'all to anyone in need!

I cannot express my gratitude enough to Denice and Josh. Letting my sweet boy go was an incredibly hard decision to make. As it is for everyone. The whole experience was peaceful. I truly believe my boy had the best passing I could have ever asked for. She let me be a complete mess of tears and said some words of comfort that really stuck with me. I probably used a whole box of tissues. I will forever appreciate the care and compassion that she showed me during that painful time. And just 6 days later I was able to pick up his ashes.

These people were absolutely the most amazing and caring people. We had to put our dog down after a very traumatic event and river valley came to the house and gave my bowser the most beautiful peaceful passing. She was caring and did a wonderful job of letting us say goodbye and was very professional but also took her time and did not make us feel rushed. She then gave us some info on grief and resources which was very helpful. We then got my dog cremated and they let us cremate him with his favorite jacket and rope which we are grateful for. Today we picked up him up and they put him in a beautiful urn and not a box or a bag which we appreciated greatly. They also did a wonderful job with the nose print we ordered and gave us a few things when we picked him up like a poem and some flowers to plant which was a sweet touch. I highly recommend them if it’s time for you pet. And price wise they where very good. We paid less then $500 for everything and for sure it was worth every penny.

I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with River Valley Gateway. From the phone call to make the appointment, to the visit itself, they showed so much compassion and understanding for me and my beloved cat. It was a very emotional and heart-wrenching decision to say goodbye to my furry friend, but they made the experience as comforting as possible. Thank you so much for the care you gave my sweet Miso and the easy cross over the rainbow bridge ❤️
