How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Friday night, January 23rd around 7pm, my dog died. I picked up my phone, frantically googled emergency vets and this place came up. I called them in a state of complete panic and they asked if I could get him in, but I was alone and he was a mastiff so I couldn’t. They offered to come to me, two people came, Ben and Kelly. I will never forget the trauma of how I lost my sweet boy, but I also will never forget the kindness they offered me when I was in a state of absolute inability to function. They sat with me, talked with me, waited until I was ready for them to take him and then didn’t make me worry about anything further in that moment. When I called the next day to make arrangements, Lizzie picked up and offered even more kindness through presence I could feel even through the phone. If you need empathy and fast action, I absolutely recommend this place. In case any of you who helped me see this review, thank you again, for everything… I also wanted you to see the light in his eyes when he was alive, he was the sweetest soul.

My 16 year old cat came and was admitted to the ER with acute kidney injury and hypertension secondary to an obstructed kidney stone in her ureter. The team was absolutely outstanding. She was transferred to another hospital for surgery, but the 4 days Monkee was at VEG the team was in constant contact with me about all updates. Every morning I received communication on how she did overnight. The best part was as an anxious pet mama I could sit by her side day or night for as long as I wanted. It’s an open concept so you see everything that goes on. I cannot thank this team at VEG DTC enough. You all are amazing, compassionate and truly enjoy what you do. Thanks for all the patience you had with me as well. Much love.

I was in a panic in tears when I walked in the door. Everyone was so friendly, understanding and helpful. They calmed me down and took care of my baby. They didn't make me feel bad and even worked within my budget. In fact, they didn't even discuss payment until my little guy was more stable.

I had to bring my 15 week old puppy in because I thought he was having a little stroke (luckily he wasn’t). I was terrified going in and the team here welcomed us with open arms. They took Jasper in immediately and allowed me to stay with him the entire time. Everything was super clean as well. Turns out my boy was stoned out of his mind after getting into street pot on a walk. They gave him fluids and sent us on our way. The bill wasn’t as bad as it could have been for an ER visit. They helped save money where they could by recommending what was needed and what wasn’t needed I didn’t feel like they were doing anything unnecessary to charge or anything. The whole experience was great and we will come back if we ever need to!

Like many others who have reviewed, I had to bring my cat, Joey, into VEG on what turned out to be the worst day of my life. Every member of the staff at VEG were so kind and compassionate from the moment I walked in the door. I didn't sit in a waiting room at all; we were immediately taken into triage. Summer & Dr. Maria Koytcheva did a thorough exam of Joey and walked me through all of the options, including the experience for my cat should I decide to hospitalize. I definitely didn't want to see Joey continue suffering, so I made the hardest decision I've ever made. Summer & Maria gave me all the time I needed and helped me start to process the loss of my best friend of 17 years. While I had some family with me for support, Maria sat with me and talked me through the gift that we're able to give our pets: stopping their suffering. Like humans, pets are living creatures that are susceptible to disease, accidents and aging. As a loving pet owner, I was able to take his pain away and let him rest in peace. VEG provided me with some paw and nose prints, a paw clay piece, and a vial of Joey's fur. I will always and forever be grateful for their support and compassion on that day.
