How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We don’t live in Denver full-time so we didn’t have a vet when our 12.5 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel started having severe respiratory distress. I called ahead and filled out the form and when we brought him in there were 3 people looking at him immediately. They checked his oxygen levels and got him on oxygen and got him some X-rays. The X-rays revealed a mass in his stomach and one in his throat. He had a heart attack from lack of oxygen while they were trying to help him. It was a long and difficult night - but he was well cared for in his final hours - Dr Kelly and the entire team were kind and caring and focused on what was best for Drake. We were there a few hours and I watched as other animals came in and watched how they took care of each one and ensured the owners were comfortable. I had assumed they would take Drake back, but I was able to be with him the entire time. They also have me space to grieve and I appreciated their thoughtfulness and consideration. He had a wonderful life and we miss him - but we would definitely go to the same ER again. One pic is Drake in the oxygen area after they had given him something to calm him. There was another small dog there who had to stay overnight - when they put the little dog in the kennel the dog was constantly barking - so one of the techs put the dog in a little harness and carried her around- this completely calmed her. They just handled her really well.

Great care. Staff is engaged and never seems rushed even though they can get very busy. It’s emergency care so not cheap but worth the cost to get your pet good care. My cat had a pretty deep laceration injury and I got to stay in the room during his sedation and procedure. They were great about answering questions and giving discharge instructions. Even wrapped up my cat in a towel and let me hold him while he came out of sedation. I would definitely recommend this place if your pet is having an emergency.

I took my dog to VEG after he vomit several socks. I meant to submit this when we were first discharged but I was still so emotional and raw, I needed some time to recover from our trauma and thought it best to wait to collect my thoughts. I wanted you all to know how much you impacted our lives and how much we sincerely appreciate the care and honest love that we received. First, I walked in to VEG highly emotional, i knew something was sincerely wrong with my golden retriever, Gus, and our normal vet turned us away because they were closing for the day. Kailey was the most wonderful face to see when I arrived. She held my hand and provided me comfort during those terrifying and early moments. Next, I was greeted by Dr. Voss. She truly listened to my concerns and I’m so thankful that she didn’t rush surgery after we determined there was another object in his system. She was so attentive and patient while we discussed all of our options, she respected my decision to wait and see how Gus progressed and comforted me during those scary hours. After 6 hours at the hospital, realizing that Gus was going to spend the night there, the only reason I felt comfortable leaving to get some sleep and check on my other dog at home was Noblin. Noblin was so sweet with Gus and even after I left they sent multiple updates cuddling Gussy. I was confident he was getting the attention and care needed during that critical night. I arrived at 6am the next morning, terrified to hear the update on Gussy. Dr Sotiropoulos was so kind and patient with me. She talked me through the pros and cons of surgery now vs waiting and encouraged me that he was a strong and great candidate for surgery. Additionally, i was offered the opportunity to stay with him and watch (although, as someone who had previously been a vet tech and witnessed surgeries before, I knew I couldn’t do that for my own mental health). I’m so thankful for her expertise and consistent updates during surgery. Gus’ surgery went well, he was discharged within 24 hours and almost 2 months later he is doing great. The care that we received at VEG was stellar. I can’t say enough about the team who literally saved the life of my heart dog. I’m so thankful for them and would recommend them to anyone who needs emergent care for their let.

Came in after our dog was experiencing an allergic reaction to something and was immediately seen and taken care of by the friendliest staff. The whole environment of VEG is very open and hands on too. If my dog is ever in need, I will be taking him here. Howard is doing MUCH better and is almost back to his normal self :)

I should’ve written this review a long time ago…in November 2020 I brought in my geriatric yorkie poo after he was attacked in his side by a much larger dog (resulting in, I later learned, a broken rib). Being injured myself after getting in between the dogs, I had to drop Tripp off so that I could go to the ER and get stitched up and x-rayed (turned out my finger was broken, requiring surgery!). They took him right away and were so calm and comforting, assuring me he’d get all the care he needed even though I couldn’t be there for them to consult. I must’ve called every half hour to check on him, always getting through right away and getting thorough updates. When I was able to get over there to see him, they brought me back and pulled one of their desk chairs up to his “tank,” telling me to stay as long as I wanted. It was clear the way they talked about him that they’d put the same love into his recovery that they would for their own pet. He ended up staying two nights; when he came home he seemed almost totally back to normal, and once the bandage came off you wouldn’t even know he’d been injured. Fast forward to today and, even at nearly 14 years old, he’s the same spunky little guy he was before the attack. When I dropped him at VEG I knew there was a chance I’d never see him again. I still sometimes get teary with gratitude thinking of that day and how the outcome could’ve been so different. I’ve had to bring him back in a few times since for more minor “emergencies” and have had the same positive experience each time. I can’t express how thankful I am to have VEG right around the corner and for all the wonderful people who make it what it is. (Photos show Tripp on the day of the attack then at home a week or so later, just after getting his bandage off, happy as can be.)
