How to Save Money at Northfield Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

awesome awesome awesome. they are so very friendly they took great care of my little guy "lucky". prices were lower than most places. The staff is great with follow-up phone calls and they even got me the chip number from my little guy so I can go online and fill out now paperwork. I would recommend this place to anybody who loves their pet dearly. I will never go anywhere else.

We've been taking our dogs to Northfield Veterinary Hospital for a little under a year now and we could not be happier. All of the doctors and technicians we've interacted with have been kind, understanding, and very professional. We've now had both of our dogs go through dental procedures with this team and we were well-informed through the process and supported after the procedures. Each time we've gotten a call from the doctor the day after to ensure that our dogs are doing well and, in the case of our one dog who had several teeth removed, a check-in appointment after the procedure moved up to the same day we called in to check if some white around the stitches was OK. There are several vets in our area that are a shorter drive, but Northfield Vet is worth the trip for the level of care we receive.

Adore Dr.Sandal for her kindness and compassion. I drive 45 mins to get there. So worth the time and effort. Now for the “Office Mgr.” Megan is rude and condescending. So busy being busy. Why do I saw this. I was literally 2 mins late for my appointment due to traffic. Was told I would have to be rescheduled for a later date or wait 1 hour + so see the other Vet. This translates into I either drive 11/2 hours for NOTHING or wait an hour for an appointment. All over a 2 minute tardiness. This means their time is ever so more valuable and my time is worth NOTHING! There was NO mention of the tardiness/rescheduling policy in ANY communication with their office. How was I to know? When I spoke to Megan about this issue she was very combative, arrogant, and self righteous. Her utter lack of Customer Service skills is deplorable. Megan is a large detriment to Northfield Vet Hospital! Unfortunately Megan handled my payment process and escalated my service charges in revenge for my dressing down of her. Inappropriate and childish. My complaint is not the first about Megan and won’t be the last. It is exactly this sort of demeanor that DESTROYS a business!

Best vet ever. We have been taking our cat, Mrs. Bigglesworth here since she was a kitten Always the best care. Now we have two more kittens, and I wouldn't think of taking them anywhere else. Their names are Mr. O' Malley and Thee Dutchess.

It’s very frustrating when your vet does not return calls (3) or an email. Unfortunately the business side is awful. Getting in for a checkup is 2-4 weeks out. I would be willing to wait had I even been able to make an appointment- or get a call back for that matter. Our 3 dogs will now find a new vet, after 5 years.
