How to Save Money at The Veterinary Behavior Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for Dr. Fagen and her team. My dog was troubled, not sleeping, fighting with my other dog and my regular vet suggested this place for guidance. After months of trial and error, months of dog training from Sarah, my dog is like a new dog. She sleeps through the night, and my multi-dog household is manageable and happy. Everyone is always so kind, so empathic, so helpful and responsive. I will furever be so thankful and suggest this place to anyone needing assistance with their animals. You all are the best! Nova also thanks you!

We sought out the support of the Vet Behavior Center after a reactive incident with our dog, June. What we had hoped was just puppy behavior was clearly becoming something more complicated, and we were out of our depth. A few weeks later, we had our first appointment with Dr. Feldman, who made us feel understood, validated, and most importantly, like our girl was in caring, knowledgeable hands. A year later, she still has not had a single incident. The combination of training and medication recommended to us has done wonders. She's less anxious, able to take on the world, and most importantly, happy. It's a joy to watch her hear another dog bark, look in that direction, and disengage by shaking off and coming back over to play with us. In the year since, we've mentioned VBC to our vet, a trainer, and even our friends. Whenever we do, we always get the same enthusiastic response and a story of how they (or someone they know) have been tremendously helped by the team here. We're so grateful for VBC, and couldn't provide a more glowing recommendation for their services.

Dr. Fagan and Ezra are amazing with our dogs and have given us so much support. Every appt I walk away with more hope and confidence that our rescues will find comfort in their skin and allow us to experience things we've needed to avoid with anxious dogs. The entire team, from vet techs to front desk staff, have been welcoming and very easy to work with. Highly recommend!

I can't say enough great things about the Veterinary Behavior Center. When we started at VBC, our dog, Olive, was afraid of any human she didn't know, and would bark at them incessantly to get them to go away. The team at VBC came up with an thoughtful plan to reduce Olive's stress by a) trying out a sequence of medications to see what Olive responded to best, and b) then gradually and systematically exposing her to new humans and their common movements (Olive weirdly hated it when people stood up from a sitting position) by associating the stimuli with positives (sound markers and treats). The process was, again, gradual, but magical. Dr. Stacey Jones is incredibly empathetic, supportive, and patient, and Ezra, our trainer, went over and above what I would expect from a trainer. Olive's progress has been shocking; if you told me where we would be after a year of training, my wife and I wouldn't have believed you. Olive now sees people out on walks, and if they come rather close or cross our paths, she does fine. 👈 That sounds like it shouldn't be immensely heartening and impressive... but it is 🥲

Dr. Fagan and behavior tech Ezra are an outstanding combo! We have a couple of rescues and the support we have received and by extension the improvements in our girls is spectacular.
