How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff were exceptional from the check-in, follow-up, and check-out! The hospital staff were professional, knowledgeable, and offered great customer service. My pup and I absolutely loved Dr Jeannie Grijalva's energy and care. We both felt welcome, appreciated, and taken care of completely! She was knowledgeable and professional. My only issues were the staff shortage and very long wait time.

Working Man

I drove all the way from Pleasanton for the last 415 pm appointment of the day. My dog was having coughing fits. Sat in the room for almost 1.5 hours. Lady comes in and tells me they will have to re-schedule my appointment cause they overbooked appointments. I told her are you serious? Then she left and never came back. Finally almost 2 hours later vet came with different treatment options. Next lady who drew up antibiotics blamed everything on manager. She voiced that manager overbooks all appointments. Finally left around 615pm. What a crazy disorganized place?

Worst Customer Service, and they will retaliate if you reach out to Vetco Total Care for customer service assistance. I scheduled a veterinary appointment for my cat, who's been seen previously for other routine vaccination appointments. I drove out to the appointment and was unable to answer my phone. Upon arrival, I informed the receptionist my appointment time and my pets name. I was informed I could not be seen since I was a few minutes late. Listening to my voicemail from the previous day, the receptionist had called me 10 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment to inform me that my appointment was cancelled. However, I was informed it was because I was late. I spoke to the manager and gave me another explenation for why my appointment was cancelled. Which is it? Desperate to get my cat seen, I Re schedule my appointment for the next day as a tech appointment drop off, since I couldn't make it to a scheduled appointment visit due to conflicting work schedule. The following day, I got checked in, signed off paperwork, and informed the tech that my cat was a bit nervous during the drive. 15 minutes later, I get a call from the receptionist asking me to come back and pick up my cat because he was too anxious for his appointment. I explained to the receptionist I could not turn around and pick up my cat since I arrived to work, and also explained that I already informed the tech that my pet was anxious upon arrival. I also requested sedatives for my cat and for the vet staff to try later since my cat would be there for the remainder of the day. I was left on hold and never had anyone pick up the line, and ended up calling them back to speak with the manager. I expressed my concerns to the manager, and was assured that my cat would be given sedatives and given another attempt for his procedure, and additionally, I would be called throughout the day with updates. I had no calls whatsoever from the establishment, worried, I called several times before their lunch break and after, no one answered. I called customer service and was informed to call the store number. Unfortunately, none of the veterinary staff called me until way later during the day to inform me that my pet didn't get treatment at all that day, and no charge for the visit that day. During pick up, I noticed the receptionist was answering and making phone calls. I payed my appointment visit, but wasn't offered to be rescheduled. The manager came out with my pet and I asked if either staff member could go ahead and reschedule my appointment. Only to notice the receptionist rolling her eyes while the manager rescheduled it. My frustration was not that I had to reschedule my appointments. The lack of professionalism to communicate with clients, and ALL the staff members to be on the same page is what's frustrating to me. Which by the way, I did communicate my concerns to the manager, only for this individual to give me excuses of their services. I spoke to the customer service line for the establishment, to express my concerns. I gave the manager the opportunity to take my concerns seriously before i even called the customer service line. Two days before my pets third Re scheduled appointment I recieve two different calls with a message stating that no services could be provided to my pet and find another establishment for my pet to be seen. Waste of time.
