How to Save Money at Apex Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Block and her staff were so kind and patient with us, it really helped to ease my stress and my dog's stress. Everyone was so understanding of my dog's nervousness that it was so refreshing to not have to profusely apologize for taking up too much time. Nothing felt rushed and it really seemed like we were just hanging out chatting about my dog. I've never experienced such amazing vet care. Everyone was so wonderful but I really appreciated being able to chat a bit with Candice before the exam. She's so friendly it really helped calm me down. Dr. Block was also so amazing and loved chatting with her after the exam as well. I almost wish we'd have annual visits here because it was such a great experience but luckily no heart problems here 🤞thank you everyone! The warmth and empathy from the staff felt extremely genuine. I'm usually very anxious in these situations but since everyone was so kind and patient it really put me and my pup at ease. Please give them a visit if you are in need of a cardiologist!

Doctor Chloe, her staff, facility are all excellent. The practice has been open since October 2024 only. And they are making their best effort to be a go-to specialist for the peninsula South and South Bay area for cardiac issues. The facility sports a boutique vibe, and the calm environment works for us and our pet. We found everyone to be thoughtful warm professional and genuinely caring kind people who seem to really enjoy their job and the patients. Our small senior pet has multiple medical conditions and is often anxious but reacted very well to the vet and staff. So we appreciate their way with and handling of him. It was also quite unique, special and considerate of the practice to allow us to go in the room and be with our pet while a medical test is being done. Being right near him so he could hear us and know we were there while the vet was performing the scan hopefully relieved most of our pet's anxiety and nerves. All of the staff seem caring and nice. We are impressed by Dr. Chloe's knowledge, background, skills, thoughtful approach, candid assessment and manner with us and our pet. We feel comfortable recommending her and Apex to any Silicon Valley and peninsula area pet companions family and friends.

I had a great experience here with my senior cat. The facility is relaxing for both people and animals, definitely feels spa-like. Their booking process is easy and you get an estimate when making an appointment, which I wish all vets would do! Their prices are fair for the Bay Area. There are some thoughtful touches to enhance your experience like a coffee/tea bar and a folder to hold discharge paperwork. There’s clearly been a lot of thought and care that goes into creating this practice and it shows! All the staff were friendly, personable, and clearly love animals. Very cool that their exam tables can be moved out of the way and the exam can be done on the floor. It felt much less clinical and way more approachable and comfortable. It was great to accompany my cat during the echo. Dr. Block explained the results and treatment plan clearly, using a white board to show the heart. I would 100% go back if I wasn’t moving out of state soon. I highly recommend them if you need a cardiologist for your pet!

We took our dog, Milo, to Apex to have Dr. Block assess a heart murmur. We were put in a waiting room with a dog bed, water, and chairs for humans. One of the vet techs came in almost immediately and instantly made all of us feel comfortable. She explained what they would be doing, asked us some questions, took some readings, and soon after Dr. Block came in. She sat on the floor with Milo. She reviewed what they would be doing and we were then invited into the room for the echocardiogram. We were able to watch and she explained what we were seeing. Back in the patient room, Dr. Block shared her diagnosis based on the exam and even drew a diagram for us to better understand Milo's condition. She was extremely thorough as she gave us her recommendations. It is always a stressful time when we face a life-threatening health issue in our beloved pets. We left there feeling hopeful and grateful to have this amazing veterinary team as partners as we navigate the next steps for Milo. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Excellent veterinary care, handicap/wheelchair accessible & set up to keep pets calm/happy. They walked me through each step, answered questions and let me stay with my cat during echocardiogram to better understand him. Wonderful experience with great staff! Grateful to have found them.
