How to Save Money at VCA McClave Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They were so helpful with my kitty, Tim. He had kidney stones, so I brought him in as soon as a realized he was not acting normal. They did a small physical and took an ultra sound of his stomach to diagnose him! They did not charge us for that service and recommend us some hospitals to take him immediately to. They even called to check up a couple days later. Thank you to the kind souls who helped us

Some doctors provide honest and thorough care, unlike the old male doctor who tries to upsell unnecessary services, disregarding your financial concerns. It's frustrating when a doctor charges $115 for a consultation but offers minimal value, merely repeating information available online without even examining your pet. Avoid the disappointment and financial strain by seeking more affordable care at nearby VCA animal hospitals. Don't make the mistake of trusting these individuals, especially after being scammed by the older doctor who will extract $115 from you under false pretenses.

I love VCA McClave Animal Hospital! The staff is always kind to my senior dog Boom Boom, who seems to enjoy coming here. The floors are easy for him to walk on and the place is always clean. It used to be a longer wait for an appointment but it seems like there are more doctors available now to care for the pets so the wait isn't so bad. Boom Boom has neck and joint problems so my number one concern is that he's comfortable. I feel like he's treated with kindness here and I'm able to provide him a comfortable life with what the doctor has recommended for him. I used to work here years ago but moved on in 2007. This is still my primary veterinary hospital though. I like that you can make an appointment or ask for a walk in time if you have an urgent situation come up. I also appreciate that they'll text you when your refill is ready if you request it. They have a cool app that you can look up your invoices and etc. on as well. They've also recently added a valet to the parking lot so it's easy in and out. I'm including a picture of Boom Boom because at his most recent visit in December 2022 because he's super cute.

My kitties had CareClub at this VCA for two years until we moved back to Guam. Moving with two cats to Guam was extremely stressful because Guam has various requirements for entering a non-rabies territory from the mainland which has potential exposure to rabies. Kristen Wendel was my nurse at VCA who really held my hand throughout the entire process of getting my kitties prepared for travel. She didn't let the 10+ page TO DO pamphlet from Guam's Department of Agriculture scare her! Kristen was able to break down the list for me easily and made sure I was scheduled for all of my appointments in a timely manner. The whole process took around 10 months and I cannot thank Kristen enough for being such a huge help. From LAX, we connected through two more airports to get to Guam and we were able to travel stress free because Kristen had prepared us with necessary paperwork. I was so happy that my kitties did not have to quarantine in Guam and got to come home with me right from the airport. If you're planning to move out of state to Guam or Hawaii, definitely see Kristen Wendel for help. VCA is so lucky to have her!
