How to Save Money at East Petaluma Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Rupiper and his staff literally saved my dog's life after she was run over by a truck. We carried her in bleeding and they dropped everything and gave her the care she needed including emergency surgery. They were incredibly sensitive and compassionate and kept us informed the whole time. We are so happy to say our puppy is making a complete recovery. So much thanks to Dr. Rupiper and his staff for all they did to save our pup.

My bird gets all his medical needs from the best bird vet on earth! Very informative humorous and understanding. I’ve been to a lot of different vets in my life for cats dogs turtles, but these folks they’re amazing. You can see all the work they do for the community as well, and do a large part of their work for the betterment of animals :-) thank you for all you do

Wonderful vet! Very caring sweet and complimentative doctors. They made my husband and I feel very comfortable and good about how we are taking care of our huskies. Most Importantly they were great with our dogs! Made them feel at ease since the vet is not their favorite outing! Thank you for such great visits!

We are Petaluma newbies of about 7 months and we’re looking for a vet to care for our pets. Dr. Rupiper is one of the best vets we have worked with. So far 2 of our animals have been seen and each time he is very loving to them and thoroughly explains anything going on with our furrbabies. You can tell he has a real passion for animals and also making sure that us, the parents, are at ease in any situation. I feel so lucky and happy to have found his office. Office staff is amazing as well. 100% recommend.

Would not recommend this “animal hospital” to anyone. I wish I had read the reviews before bringing my bird here. Not only was Dr Rupiper super rough with my bird, they also charged me $125 for an examination when he took 5 minutes just to just look at the wing that was bleeding and tell me she was fine. He never checked anything else and majority of the visit was just having her in a headlock while she is screaming and crying of pain and all he was doing was giving me facts about birds. I didn’t come for that I came to see if she’s okay. I wish he had been more gentle with her. It’s the next day and she’s in way more pain than she was before I took her. She can’t even walk or do anything without being in a lot of pain and yelling and crying. They said she might be sore from the handling. Yea I don’t doubt that and maybe even made the issue worse. I’ve been to a rescue before for another issue she had with her wings and they were way more gentle with her. I am not satisfied at all with this vet. Also the staff, most of them were nice but there was one lady with brown hair that was just giving off super rude vibes. I also spoke to her on the phone and was no help at all. She said I don’t know who you spoke to but it wasn’t me. I then said well I’m sure you are also able to assist me and I just got hung up on. I am extremely upset because my bird is in 10x more pain than she was before I brought her and all they can say is that it’s normal. I will never bring my bird here again.
