How to Save Money at Petsadena Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our pup Doodle had a very rough summer with a foxtail injury, diagnosis of hypothyroidism, pneumonia, and perianal abscess. Its been quite an experience but all the staffs at Petsadena, especially Dr. Fred Li’s team, went through great length to ensure Doodle’s recovery. Throughout Doodle’s treatment, Petsadena have been very responsible, caring, and quick in getting back to me with respect to appointments as well as follow-ups with my bombard of questions. Cannot thank them enough through this entire thing!

The staff here is greedy for your money. We scheduled for 10:00am, however our cutie kitty kept avoiding getting in the cage. We were aware that our lateness would cause trouble to the doctor so we made a phone call, and the agent said that we could schedule a “drop-off” to avoid rescheduling and cancellation penalty (equal to your appointment fee). We were happy to accept the drop-off option, and arrived at 10:40am. Ironically, the receptionist told us there was a 40-minute deadline for drop-off! A deadline for “drop-off”, exactly at the time of your arrival. Enjoy your time with these genius chameleons.

I’ve gotten one check up and one dental cleaning here, and I think their services and staff are great! I appreciate that everyone is friendly and takes their time to have a thorough conversation and answer your questions. The phone line actually works every time, and you can call or text for updates if your dog is with them for a service. They are also very transparent about pricing and providing invoice. Their tech-forward approach to online consent forms, reminders, and keeping notes in their system is also a big plus. For me so far, they also have not delayed/backed up appointments longer than 10 ish minutes while you’re waiting. Lastly, the building is very clean and my dog doesn’t have a weird hospital smell after coming home from her dental. The only 2 downsides are they basically have no parking on site, and also don’t communicate with the places you order Heartgard from - they run tests and give you an approval/prescription for you to get the Heartgard yourself.

Petsadena holds a special place in my heart because Dr. Evelyn helped us out with our dog’s end of life care when others wouldn’t touch the situation without sending us to specialty hospitals first. I’ve worked in animal care for more than a decade and understand best standard of care practices and liability, however, when palliative care for a geriatric patient is what’s desired, you have to drop the recommendations to oncologists, additional ultrasounds, cytologies, biopsies, etc etc etc. Long story short: My 16 yr old was diagnosed w cancer a yr ago. Ultrasounds, surgeries, xrays, many checkups and labs later, we decided we did not want to risk him not coming out of another surgery or to put him thru chemo. Dr. Evelyn and team drained our boy’s mass once a month and kept him comfortable. This helped us spend another 6 months with him. When it came time to euthanize, the attending doctor, Fred Li, was compassionate and took his time to comfort us. He was gentle with Nacho. Receptionists were awesome given the nightmare situation- I showed up unannounced at 8:15am on a Monday. This happens a lot at Vet clinics but, trust me, they are very busy and this is never an ideal situation. Reception handed it beautifully and told me to come in with Nacho and my boyfriend as I fought back tears. The process was not scheduled but never felt rushed. Petsadena, thank you for all that you do. Thank you for keeping Nacho comfortable and allowing him to live his final months with dignity. Thank you so much. -Calla and Steve

I took my dog (LaLa) there today and when I went in I thought I’d be there for hours because it was busy, but was in and out in 1 hour. My girl walked on 3 legs going in and came out walking on all four. The staff were pleasant and caring as well as the doctor! I recommend this place for your animals.
