How to Save Money at Pacific Animal Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Jarrah, Dr. Geerstema and all the staff at Pacific Animal Hospital are the best veterinary hospital we've attended for the past few years. Dr. Jarrah is so compassionate, listens to all my concerns, and genuinely tries to find the best plan of care for my 12 year old senior corgi. Even as I've cried many times in her office she goes above and beyond calling late or as early as possible with test results to ease my anxiety. I have nothing but good things to say about her and all the other vets and staff who've helped my sweet girl Daisy throughout the years. If you are looking for a quality veterinarian hospital who will do their best to help your furry friend, I would highly recommend everyone at Pacific Animal Hospital! Thank you to all of you that have helped me keep my sweet senior lady going strong. -Nancy, Daisy, and Winston.

Again, I give PAH 5 stars! Dr. Robertson was able to squeeze me in between patients, and was able to diagnose and treat my cat’s unexplained weight loss. She’s already gained 1.1 pounds! The office staff and doctors make me feel totally confident that my Lucy is in the best hands possible. I won’t take her anywhere else!

If zero stars were an option that is what I would choose. My mother took her cat to PAH, but ultimately chose to move to a more caring and thorough vet after PAH was not aggressive enough in treating her cat’s illness and was clearly more interested in pushing unnecessary expenses. When the cat’s health deteriorated very quickly on a Saturday (my mother’s new vet wasn’t open), my mother reached out to PAH to have the cat humanely euthanized. The vet tech who answered the phone couldn’t have been more rude and heartless. She refused to provide any treatment unless my mother could show proof of rabies vaccination that day. My mother had this, but was unable to get the records on a Saturday. The cat was suffering and waiting until Monday wasn’t an option. My mother called Oceanside Animal Hospital, was very warmly welcomed without any records and her cat was humanely euthanized that same day. Avoid PAH if you are looking for compassion or empathy for animals.

My dog Ruby woke up and was severely lethargic and weak. She could not walk so I took her to Pacific Animal Hospital first thing in the morning. Of course this was an emergency so I had no appointment. They took her in and saw her immediately. Gave her a thorough check up. Dr Jones was amazing with calm clear possible diagnosis they would look for. She said Ruby looked weak but eyes etc looked good but she had a high fever. They took blood and stool samples and gave her IV fluids. They have in house labs so I got the test results with in and hour. Fortunately my little girl just had a bacterial bug. She was sent home with meds. And Dr Jones called me that day to see how Ruby was doing. I also need to mention the charges were not out of line in fact reasonable and fair. Over all I could not be more pleased with this entire experience. This Hospital is the best!

We recently started taking our dogs to Pacific Animal Hospital. Our usually “stressed to go to the vet” dog had no issues! Also he can be hard to handle , but they said he was great. We had good service. Friendly and caring front office, vet tech, and veterinarians.
