How to Save Money at Ohana Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

These people are the best! My 90lb 2 1/2 yr old dog is very protective of me so we take every necessary measure when out and about. He is especially weary of men. But every visit to Ohana is a breeze. The vet and vet techs ( both men) are so aware of how to greet a reactive dog that my pup was instantly at ease with them. This is huge!! He has no anxiety, his mowhawk never stands up, doesn't back himself into me when they enter the exam room. If you have ever tried to explain that 'he's really a good boy' while your dog is losing his marbles, you get it. The treatments recommended are always explained well , they don't prescribe unnecessary meds or let you leave feeling like you need to take out a second mortgage. I have been to many vets and this one is by far the best! Can not say enough good things. I have no affiliation, was just recommended by a friend.

I took my leopard gecko, Nico, to Ohana for a check up and parasite testing. I was very impressed with the attention to detail. Dr. Steffes came in and sat on the floor and spoke to me. He asked questions about how Nico was eating, what vitamins I used, how her enclosure was set up. When it was time for the exam, Dr. Steffes very gently picked Nico up and examined her. He obviously knows how to handle delicate little exotic animals. And there was no risk of dropping her or her jumping onto the floor because he was already seated on the floor. It made me feel much more at ease. I live about 30 mins away from Ohana but I'm going to bring my dog there for an exam, too. There are several vets that closer to where I live but Ohana is the best vet I've ever been to so I want to bring all of my pets there.

Great vet even during covid. They were very friendly with my pets. Sadly, a couple of years after them being our primary vet, we had to put our girl Diamond down here. They were very nice and we appreciated the sympathy during that difficult time.

I brought in my rabbit for GI Stasis (for those that don't know rabbits, GI Stasis can be deadly even within a day without treatment). I called around to several vets recommended for rabbits, and no one had any availability. Ohana squeezed in an appointment for him. Even though the vet Dr. Steffes, was busy, he did a thorough check and took the time to explain his theories to me (it can be hard to determine a cause of Stasis), and gave me several options on treatment to add to what I was already doing. He also gave recommendations of further/future testing to uncover a possible trigger for chronic Stasis. He was very knowledgeable of various conditions and illnesses affecting rabbits and was also understanding of our budget. I made an appointment for my other bunny and my tortoise for their wellness checks. We just moved here about a year ago and hadn't established a vet yet, but I am definitely going to come back here. UPDATE: I've now been back many, many times for our rabbits and our tortoise, and Dr. Steffes is absolutely the best! He's always very gentle with them, and even sits on the floor with the animals so they're comfortable. He's very knowledgeable, and has always been available for us when we need it, even though they are always very busy.

Great place, the staff is really amazing, very helpful and friendly. The vet is very professional, and explained everything very well. They took really good care of our baby.
