How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Staff is great. They have always been exceptional with my fur babies. All the doctors are kind and very thoughful not only of my dogs' health but of my pocketbook. They help me know my options and risks without feeking guilty. I really appreciate all they do for my puppies.

Just checked on line and their rating is 3.5 and lots of complain next to multiple lawsuits. Recently adupted two puppies, they had Banfield insurance through previous owner, I took them for their check up. Keep in mind that because previous owner had a year contract with them both still under her insurance. But they also asked me to pay about $68 for their visit. I asked why they are both have health coverage agreed through her owners with me, he replied because you are new owner. Before I take the puppies was on their website, saw their advertise that they are offering free first time visit. I told him that if you are considering me as new owner then you have on line free visit. He said did you bring in the bar code? I was stunned that is what you offer on your web site and then start googling their website on my cell. Anyhow he give me only $30 discount. He also said as new owner you need to pay $218 extra on top of their monthly premium as new owner. On the other hand they don't let previous owner off the hook either, she will be still liable to pay for the remainder of term left on both puppies. After I paid the fee for first visit told them one of puppies need special blood test run for her anzym level and her appointment is in LA, they told me don't worry you don't need to go to LA we do everything here. 3 weeks passed and I took my puppy for her special blood test assuming that's what they will do for her. I went in they took the puppy and I was sitting in lobby waiting for her. After about 40-50 the doctor came out to speak to me and left. The receptionist said to me I have to pay $180 for blood work. Took another 20-30 minutes discussion and my puppy still in back. Anyhow because it was close to their closing time she told me go home and our manager will call you tomorrow. Doctor told me the results for her blood test will be tomorrow and he will call me. It was Thursday July 8th and today is Sunday and still haven't heard from them. I heard from neighbor that she took her puppy for vaccination there and right after vaccination end up in emergency room because her dog wasn't breathing, ER revived the dog and her dog doing fine and Banfield paid ER fees of $7000 but the panic and feeling of loosing her dog still there. After the brought my puppy out she was scared to death and was shaking, her heartbeat so fast and I was almost in tears that what do they do with her. This is not the way to treat animal in their care. I really don't trust them anymore to touch my puppies. The system is scam and money hunter, not after well being of dog.

I’ve been bringing my dog to this location for 8 years. I’ve always appreciated the follow-up calls, attention to the whole health of the dog, and professionalism. He recently passed and their empathy and care during his last days was so very much appreciated. Thanks to the entire staff and especially Dr. MCCarthy.

DO NOT GO TO ANY BAMFIELD HOSPITAL. That’s being gentle..All they care about is making money. Almost lost my ridgeback b/c of this place. All they wanted to was tests, instead of saving me dog. Had a blocked bladder for an unknown number of days, most likely kidney stone. They were able to get him to pee, but should have put him on fluid therapy I know now. He lost 20lbs in 10 days. Basically said his kidneys are failing, but he had an infection. Thank goodness I found Trinity hospital in Laguna Hills, they truly saved him.

TWICE now I have needed urgent care for my dog. Both times they said bring her right in. “The Dr. is in surgery right now but let’s get your pet in ASAP to examine & take her vitals first. And the Dr. will see her ASAP when he’s out of surgery.” I give Daniel 5 stars too as he was so patient and understanding, as I am freaking out on him about the fact that my dog was shaking like crazy and she couldn’t walk on her hind legs (she’s 4 yrs old) . The entire staff there are caring, helpful & comforting. Again, this is the second time this location (La Paz Road in Laguna Niguel) has indeed acted like a pet “hospital”. Again, this is also the SECOND time the Capistrano location was worthless. Their front office staff is in dire need of remembering that our pets are like our children. They act like robots; no warmth, not helpful AT ALL. The receptionist said they couldn’t see my dog until tomorrow. She said it’s not like we’re a “hospital”. In which I replied, as I freaked out again (my bad). “Yes, you are, you’re Banfield Pet HOSPITAL!” BOOM! Capo is closer to my house, but it’s worth the extra 10 minutes more to go to the BANFIELD PET HOSPITAL ON LA PAZ IN LAGUNA NIGUEL!
