How to Save Money at Surf City Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Apart from kindness, I didn’t have a good experience. I was told my male cat had dry skin and to give him some omega-3 to help. Just a few days later, I had a flea crawling on my chest. I’ve never seen a flea, so I wasn’t sure what it was at first. I just moved to California, so I had no experience with them. When I checked my male cat AND my female cat, they were infested with fleas. (And not just eggs. Full-grown fleas. My female even had bites on her back.) My cats are indoor cats only. I have no dogs. I ended up taking him to another vet. I was told there was *no way* my cat was examined. Those fleas were too advanced to miss. I went through three expensive flea treatments in my home, including one requiring an overnight stay in a hotel. Since then, I’m so incredibly paranoid that it will happen again. When I saw this clinic just won “Best of Orange County,” I had to speak up. It’s disappointing. I’m not saying they don’t do good, but clearly they take shortcuts. I don’t think I want to take the chance.

My wife and I have been to SurfCity several times with our 2 dogs to have their nails trimmed, etc. The front office always seems to be nice, but they are insistent that you cannot go back with your pet, in fact I have never met the Doctor yet !! Today was a perfect example, I needed to have my dogs nails clipped and ears checked, temp taken, etc. my dog was in there for 5 min at most. The only feedback I received was that my dogs ears were fine & $60 charge. When I got home home my wife asked me for details, which I could not provide, so she called the office. They said they gave our dog a shot and sent home some salve. Upon further inquiry, the receptionist said she was reading notes from a year ago from a previous visit !! Bottom line….poor communication, no interaction with the vet. We will not be returning….

I found a very sick kitten and was able to be seen quickly. The staff was amazing! They were thorough in explaining medications and answering any questions I might have. They were patient, kind, and understanding of my concerns.

Compassionate personal care for my 'furry baby' MISTY is what Dr. Gindi and her staff genuinely demonstrated during our visits at Surf City Pet Hospital in Huntington Beach, CA. Dr. Gindi is very professional, passionate and so wonderful with all of the ‘furry babies’ that enter her office; the reason I continued my loyalty in bringing Misty to this Vet. office. Immediately walking in, you are welcomed by very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Their prices are also reasonable. Dr. Gindi gently cared for Misty (she had a heart murmur) when a prior Vet gave her only months to live. With the proper medication and love from Dr. Gindi and her staff for Misty’s GREAT CARE, her quality of life was awesome as she lived an extra 5 years. Misty (age 13) is in doggie heaven. I am so grateful to Dr. Gindi and her staff, as their compassion and personal care for my MISTY was fantastically outstanding! I highly recommend those who love your ‘furry babies’ to make Surf City Pet Hospital in Huntington Beach your pet’s favorite Doctor to visit. In appreciation always, R. Ramos
