How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

All this place wants is money! Had a puppy that was one-year-old and they pulled 10 teeth. We came back about a year later simply because they were easy to make appointments through. So this being our second visit we brought two of our puppies in there for a simple teeth cleaning. Both 5 lb. One is two years old and the other is three. They put them both under anesthesia. The 3-year-old they said needed four teeth pulled because they were loose. We never noticed any issues at home and brush their teeth once a week so I thought that was weird. After the procedure on the 2-year-old they said it all went well. Tried to wake him up. He was dead. Attempted CPR with negative results. They killed my puppy. My guess is overdose on anesthesia. How are they not monitoring his heart and everything the whole time? We will be investigating this office. 10/10 do NOT recommend After this incident a close friend hit me up and said this happened to him with his dog not waking up at the Davis location. As well as very bad service at the Vacaville one too. I recommend you see Davis vet hospital. Do your research before you drop your fur babies off anywhere people!

Great staff, finally found staff that would thoroughly explain things to me. All my experiences have been good until the most resent one where my cat was given medication too high for his weight. Just keep an eye on that as I don't know yet what caused the mistake.

This is the best vet I have ever visited in my life. I’ve had over a dozen dogs and a handful of cats and I’ve never felt like their vet cared for them as much as this place. The office staff are friendly and helpful in person and on the phone. The techs are extremely knowledgeable and seem very caring and professional. The doctors I’ve seen have all been so friendly to me and my pets. I have a large bully breed, and have experienced no discrimination towards him, even from other customers. Also worth noting that this is the cleanest vet I’ve ever been to. A lot of mom & pop type places can look a little run down, which I know doesn’t mean they’re unsanitary or bad vets, but it’s nice going somewhere that looks well kept.

To second what someone else said, this is by far the best vet I’ve ever been to. They truly care about animals. I took my 10 year old cat (KiKi) here when she started losing weight and eating/urinating more frequently. The techs, Vera and (not sure other techs name) were so gentle with her when they did her blood draw and helped put my girl at ease. Dr. Garvin was also very caring and helpful. He took his time to explain her diagnosis to me. Even the staff working the front desk were kind and patient. Their pricing was also extremely reasonable. I am so happy I took her to Banfield Animal Hospital in Davis. Highly recommend!

We have lived all over the country, so banfield has been the best option for us. Davis and Vacaville have been the most kind and patient facilities. Our pets have always received top-notch care. When we have emergencies, we are scheduled as quickly as possible. We had to put one of our animals down, and they treated all of us with so much grace and care we will likely never go elsewhere.
