How to Save Money at Desert Paws Mobile Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Dad passed away in 2017 and our family dog Duke was my Dad’s best friend, so he was more than a dog to our family. Duke was 15 years old and he hasn’t been eating well for about a month. The night before last I woke up to Duke bleeding from his mouth and nose. My family and I were frantically trying to figure out what to do for Duke. My sister came over to help at 4am and her Van got stuck in the driveway with an ignition lock malfunction. We called the emergency vet after finally squeezing my car out of the driveway past my sisters 1999 eco line van with Duke wrapped in a towel, and we just started driving toward the emergency vet. We called the emergency vet and the lady on the phone was hard to understand, not really compassionate, and she said they were at only accepting emergencies. Duke stopped bleeding and we took that as a sign to turn around and call the mobile vet. We called many mobile vets without speaking to anyone directly. Desert Paws called us back really quickly. After we talked to them that first time, they answered every time after we called. Yesterday my brother, his wife, and his kids got to come say goodbye to Duke. Dr. Haley Violetta came to our house the next day at 9am for end of life treatment for Duke. Duke’s bleeding started again this morning and is was incredibly hard to watch. He still went out to pee and poop even with blood coming out of his mouth and nose. Dr. Violetta assured us that this was the right thing and the most compassionate thing for Duke. She walked us through the process and was really nice and loving to Duke. We sat with Duke and said goodbye. My sister got a paw print of Duke’s Paw and Duke got carried out in his favorite bed with a nice blanket covering him. We will pick up his ashes and put them next to my Dad’s ashes. Thank you Dr. Violetta for treating Duke so nicely and for helping us understand that this was the right decision. We are all still crying but I know that Duke isn’t suffering anymore, and that he got to stay near us when he passed away.

This Mobile Vet is phenomenal, contacted them prior to office hours, they called back as soon as they opened and immediately sent a vet over within an hour. The Vet was very caring and compassionate with our little fur girl, everything went smoothly and we were able to hold her as she passed away at home cuddled in her favorite pink blanket. This place deserves more than five stars, highly recommend for any pet needs.

They were so compassionate and very responsive from the initial phone call to coming to the house. Our kitty passed peacefully and I am very grateful to Dr. Hartell and Desert Paws. I give them my highest recommendation.

Dr Martin and her staff make you and your pets feel like you are all family. Their level of caring is what made us stay with Dr Martin when she started her in home services. She has known our 2 black labs since we got them at 8 weeks old, helped us when we needed to say goodbye to our boy in Nov 2020, and has stayed in touch with us since we moved to NC in 2021. She has consulted with our new vet here in Winston Salem about our girls Valley Fever testing and medication. Her team is truly caring even with us being so far away from them, they help in any way possible. Thank you Dr Martin, we miss you all and hope to see you again :-) Wanda, Frank and Lucy Oese

Dr. Rodden was my vet. She came out to help me transition Truman as he was quite sick. I can't even express my gratitude to her and Desert Paws. She went out of her way to be the one to help with Truman at the end and that he didn't pass with someone he didn't know. That meant so much too me as Tru really liked her. I would recommend as I have, any of the vets at Desert Paws! Dr. Rodden thank you for your kindness and understanding!! I am now seeing Dr. Johnson for my new pet Bella she is the white fluffy one. I can't tell you how much it means to feel that your baby is getting the best care by a really competent Dr. and staff! She is truly a very kind caring Dr.! They are all wonderful and will take the best care of your babies!
