How to Save Money at Salt River Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m grateful beyond words for the care Dr. Aguirre provided to our beloved Susie. We brought Susie in for a routine abdominal ultrasound, and thanks to Dr. Aguirre’s expertise and attention to detail, he detected bladder cancer at a very early stage. While most dogs diagnosed with bladder cancer are predicted to live only months, Susie went on to live another three and a half years—time we treasured. Dr. Aguirre later helped us navigate Susie’s kidney issues. Dr. Aguirre is not only highly skilled and knowledgeable, but he also brings genuine compassion and warmth. I can’t recommend Dr. Aguirre and his staff highly enough. If you’re looking for excellent veterinary care with heart, this is the team you want on your side.

Salt River Vet Specialist is absolutely the best! I am so grateful for everything they’ve done for my fur baby Ah Bak over the last two years. Dr. Glick's knowledge and expertise has helped Ah Bak through challenges, from resolving a UTI and bladder stone to managing hypercalcemia and IBD. Every time Dr. Glick is spot on in her diagnosis and treats holistically by considering what’s best for Ah Bak’s health and comfort. Just as importantly, Dr. Glick is incredibly kind and dedicated. She not only made timely follow-up calls, sometimes even beyond work hours, but also helped us find a new specialist after we moved to another city. Ah Bak, usually a nervous girl, always comes out of visits calm—even after ultrasounds or surgery—which says it all. She truly loves Dr. Glick and her team. The entire staff, from technicians (shoutout to Lexi and Adrell!) to the front desk, is always friendly and helpful. They answer calls and emails quickly and check in after visits to make sure Ah Bak is doing well. One time we needed to get pet-specific medicine urgently before the holidays, the front desk colleague (I think that was Kara) went the extra mile to find a pharmacy that could prepare the medicine in time. I’ve always trusted Ah Bak was in the best hands. If we weren’t moving, I’d continue bringing her here without hesitation. I can’t say enough good things about this wonderful team. Thank you for being Ah Bak’s vet family! 😊

My dog had to spend a very long, expensive day in emergency a few weeks back. The critical care Dr said she needed to see an internal specialist for her condition. She recommended Salt River Veterinary Specialists. When I called and explained the situation they got us in same day which was amazing. Dr. Glick is amazing!! Her treatment and plan for Penny was spectacular. My dog went from not being able to support her own weight and in considerable pain to being basically back to 100% and pain free in 36 hours. Everyone in this office is professional and very expedient with serious issues. I will highly recommend this office and team to any friends or family who need exceptional care for their pet. Thank you Salt River Veterinary Specialists!!!

I brought my dog in to see Dr. Rose for some imaging after a recommendation my dog's primary care veterinarian. Dr. Rose was very informative and relatable. She was quick to provide ultrasound findings to me the same day and called me the next day with the blood work results. She gave great recommendations and was open to questions.

Dr Aguirre and his support staff saved my dog’s life today. A foreign body was identified and obstructing the outflow tract in his stomach. They were able to safely remove the pieces of toy that my dog ate through a non-invasive gastroscope. I am so grateful to their team and highly recommend!
