How to Save Money at VCA Southside Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

****Update**** Unfortunately we will have to find a new clinic to take my fur babies ......after years of coming here, the change in staff and techs has subsided so I will be taking my loved ones to Tempe Veterinary Clinic per recommendation from a previous staff member at this clinic.......First time doing this so if there's a boo-boo sorry I mean to give you five amazing stars. I really appreciate the way you care for my little ones. from clipping their nails or having a procedure done you thoroughly explain the reason. Your office is so thoughtful, so caring.Thank you for everything.

The service provided by the vet tech was wonderful! Super kind and gentle with my cat. While prices are a bit steep it’s just the cost of doing business.

I took my dog to see a vet because my dog was having trouble walking and was not eating. My sister had taken him previously and they had mentioned that he had arthritis so I wanted to see what we could do. He was not doing so good and I was really scared. When we went we were assigned to Dr. Weinstein, the assistant was really nice and helpful but when the Dr came in, he literally just patted him and looked at him and said ok he’s doing really good, then he left and the assistant came back with pills that cost be about $500. I asked what the heck? What’s wrong with him and what the pills are for, there was no explanation. The assistant apologized and I paid what I had to and we left. We had to put my dog down 2 weeks later because his pain was unbearable, he wasn’t walking anymore, he didn’t eat, the pills did absolutely nothing, he couldn’t even get up. I’m heart broken and I can’t believe this actually happen. Please do not go here and if you do, by any means do not get Dr. Weinstein.

EDIT: Southside used to be the best, but ever since whatever company bought them, they've gone into a nosedive. Took one of our hounds there recently and they couldn't even be bothered to call us back...THREE TIMES!! DESPITE SPENDING ALMOST 600 BUCKS!! There are still some great people there, but this place is barely a memory of what it used to be. I do NOT recommend. Original review from YEARS ago: Southside is our absolute go-to. We have retired racing greyhounds and they are the best in town for the hounds. They don't just work with hounds, though! We brought our Boston Terriers here, too. They're awesome with all breeds and HIGHLY recommended!

Scheduled an appointment for 8 am. There was a traffic jam on the I17 and a 30 minute drive turned into an hour. I tried calling at 7:58 and the phones weren’t turned on. I tried calling again at 8 through 8:12 still the phones weren’t turned on. They finally turned them on at 8:13 and when I said I apologize there was much heavier than normal traffic and I was 3 minutes away they said that they gave away the appointment to a walk in and you aren’t allowed to be more than 10 minutes late. Nowhere that I’ve been able to find do they have the late policy posted and they don’t bother having the phones on to take calls until almost 15 minutes after they open in the morning. Also if you miss an appointment they cancel any vouchers you might have and charge you the full appointment fee to reschedule.
