How to Save Money at Integrative Vet Oncology

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

SAVE YOURSELF THE TRIP. INTEGRATIVE VET ONCOLOGY IS NOT BBB APPROVED. if you’re doing chemo for your dog please go to medvet Scottsdale. They are amazing. This place on the other hand is TRASH. the building has been their building for 13 years and it’s gross inside. Smells bad. And looks very unsanitary. The lady on the phone is RUDE and will lead you to believe you have an appointment with the doctor when you will not be able to speak to a doctor AT ALL. Unless it’s over the phone once your dog is in their care already. My gut was screaming not to do it. So I didn’t. I am going to medvet. Not only that but take the time to read the reviews of people who have been put through hell with this place. They shouldn’t even be aloud to have a business anymore. Keeping dogs under anesthesia all day. Locking the doors on people. Not keeping updated on the dogs. They have clearly no compassion for the animal and only care about the money. DO NOT DO IT. please take your baby somewhere else. Customer service is terrible. Care is not existent. You won’t be able to speak to a doctor. And lemme repeat myself THE BUILDING IS UNSANITARY. extremely disappointed in the entire experience there and glad I trusted my gut and did NOT leave my dog in their care.

IVO is outstanding! My dog has had mast cell cancer for well over a year. When my vet referred me to IVO I was afraid. The folks at IVO were great; always professional, but very empathetic and willing to answer any questions, even over the phone at later times. The people who work at the front are excellent. These are women who remember your name and listen when you need to talk. I just can't say enough.

We have been bringing our 12-year-old cat, Patches, to Dr. Hershey and the team at Integrative Veterinary Oncology for months now to manage her lymphoma. They have always been wonderful, but they truly saved her life this week. When Patches recently took a sudden turn for the worse and went into respiratory distress, the team didn't make us wait.. they got her in immediately. Thanks to their quick action and aggressive treatment, she went from fighting to breathe to eating and purring within 24 hours. It honestly felt like a miracle. Beyond the top-tier medical care, I am incredibly grateful for Dr. Hershey’s compassion. She understands the financial reality of long-term cancer treatment and has been so supportive, helping us skip unnecessary expensive diagnostics (like X-rays) so we can put every dollar toward the actual life-saving medication instead. To the front desk, the techs, and Dr. Hershey: thank you for fighting for her with us. If you need an oncologist who is both skilled and genuinely kind, this is the place.

It has taken me a very long time to right this review because it was such a difficult time. I just feel that it is very important for people to know so they don’t have to go through the same thing we did. My sweet Jazz passed away 1/8/24. We had taken him here to treat his intestinal carcinoma. His visits were very long, we would drop him off in the am and wouldn’t be able to pick him up until the end of the day. Every time I picked him up his blanket was soiled which leaves me to believe they did not take him out during the day. The treatment itself was very short however it was mandatory to leave them all day. In our time there we only met with the Dr Hershey once. Very frequently we were told that they were running late because Dr had come in late. Most times when we dropped him off the staff would make mistakes.Calling Jazz her rather than him, confusing last drop of date, confusing reason for drop off. Staff always seemed annoyed when we called in to check on him. All these things were terrible, however he had already started treatment and we didn’t want to create more issues with helping him. The heart breaking part came as he was passing. He had finished treatment and we were told that the only option he had was taking oral chemo at this point. We were waiting for genetic testing. ( we were offered to start a random one but we decide to wait for the genetic test to make sure it was the right one. His cancer was controlled, We were not advised that it was detrimental to put him on something right away). The test was sent in late and then also took longer to process with the holiday. During this three week span things started to take a turn for the worst. We had one visit that we made because he wasn’t eatting. They did a scan and saw that his cancer had spread. There was a concern that maybe there was something else going on so they said to wait until result came back to do anything. Very quickly he got very sick. We called numerous times explaining how sick he was and they would not let us come in, nor did we get a call back from the Dr Hershey. Out of desperation we went to an emergency vet. There is little they would do without talking to Dr because of his condition and not getting approval. They reached out to the Dr multiple times, finally the following day she called them back. They put him on a steroid, pain med, and IV. They also gave us instruction on what we could do. They said that we had to go to our dr moving forward for more meds. Dr Hershey never got Jazz back in nor did she call us back until I finally left a message begging and crying. I even saw that his result were in on Friday and she didn’t call until Monday. At that point she said the medication the emergent vet gave was what she would recommend and we would know when it was time. She also recommend to talk to a animal psychic if we wanted to know when it was his time. He passed away the next day. He had some very horrible days that could have been prevent if given the right medication in appropriate days, and we could have planned differently had she just seen him and told us what was happening. She gave us hope that possibly it was something else causing the no eating and sickness. They never even called us or emailed us to give us the results of the genetic testing that we spent something around $1500 for. Until I called and asked for it. We never received any thing more from them. I know we all take our pets to a place like this to get more time, we know it’s not a fix but the most important part is making sure that when they do pass it happens it the most peaceful and painless way. They took that from Jazz and from my family. The last moments were filled with stress, the unknowing, and unnecessary pain. Thank God for the emergency vet that stepped in. The negligence was unexceptable. That time was very traumatic for my family and my hope is that this does not happen to anyone else. Shame on you integrative vet oncology and Dr. Hershey.
